As I do each year, I make a distinction between “total” mocks and “unique” ones. Total ones include all the mocks that I’ve listed. Unique mocks are indicated by mock drafts that upon updating throughout the past four months, projecting a different player to the Falcons. There are many sites that will update their mocks on a weekly basis, but make little to no changes, which can ultimately skew the final numbers.

So the “unique” totals are probably more representative on which players were the most popular pick for the Falcons.

January

There were 60 total mocks munched. Of those, 47 had a “unique” pick. Here are the five most frequently mocked Falcons players:

  1. LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama (14 total, 9 unique)
  2. DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson (6 total, 6 unique)
  3. DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama (6 total, 5 unique)
  4. DT Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss (6 total, 5 unique)
  5. DT A’Shawn Robinson, Alabama (5 total, 4 unique)
  6. LB Darron Lee, Ohio State (5 total, 4 unique)

56 of the mock drafts (93 percent) munched in January feature the Falcons taking either a linebacker, edge-rusher or defensive tackle.

February

There were 76 total mocks munched with 59 having a “unique” pick. Here are the five most popular players mocked to the Falcons:

  1. DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson (16 total, 12 unique)
  2. LB Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame (10 total, 7 unique)
  3. LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama (10 total, 7 unique)
  4. LB Darron Lee, Ohio State (9 total, 7 unique)
  5. DE Emmanuel Ogbah, Oklahoma State (5 total, 3 unique)

31 of the mock drafts (41 percent) munched in February had the Falcons selecting a defensive end or “EDGE” player. 29 (or 38 percent) had them selecting a linebacker.

March

There were 131 mocks munched in March with 96 of them would be deemed “unique.” Here are the five most popular players:

  1. LB Darron Lee, Ohio State (32 total, 22 unique)
  2. LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama (30 total, 19 unique)
  3. DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville (12 total, 10 unique)
  4. LB Leonard Floyd, Georgia (9 total, 8 unique)
  5. DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson (9 total, 5 unique)

April

There were 193 total mocks munched with 121 of them being unique ones. Here are the five most popular players:

  1. LB Darron Lee, Ohio State (78 total, 42 unique)
  2. DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson (24 total, 14 unique)
  3. LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama (23 total, 13 unique)
  4. LB Leonard Floyd, Georgia (17 total, 12 unique)
  5. DE Kevin Dodd, Clemson (9 total, 6 unique)
  6. DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville (9 total, 6 unique)

Final tally: 460 total mocks munched, 321 “unique” ones. Here were the 10 most popular players:

  1. Hey Aaron. This time of year I love to see how I would do if given the job of Atlanta’s general manager, so I would love your feedback. I would cut Roddy White to save some money for free agent signings, but there has been significant talk of them keeping him, so I will pretend that is the case. I would sign the following free agents with the player to be replaced in parenthesis: OLB Bruce Irvin (Justin Durant), WR Alshon Jeffery (Nick Williams), OG Brandon Mosley (Eric Weems), DE Jared Crick (Tyson Jackson), OT Chris Hairston (Jake Long) & RB Stevan Ridley (Terron Ward). As for the draft, 1st DE Shaq Lawson (Kroy Biermann), 2nd SS Vonn Bell (William Moore), 3rd TE Nick Vannett (Tony Moeaki), 4th C Jack Allen (Chris Chester) & 7th DT Luther Maddy (Charles Godfrey). The remaining Falcon free agents I would re-sign. Would love your thoughts and love the website, keep up the good diligent work.

    • Thanks Joey.

Not a crazy “mock offseason” although Jeffery is gonna get tagged, so he’s out the window. Jared Crick kinda sucks. He’s probably the worst starter on that Texans defensive 11, and it’s probably not even close. And Hairston isn’t a great fit for the blocking scheme. But overall not body.

I don’t think the Falcons will sign Irvin, just cuz it’s gonna be so much committed to the SLB spot, which isn’t that important in the defense. But I get why people want him. He’s much better than Brooks Reed and helps out the pass rush. But as I’ve said before, it comes down to price tag. If you can get him for a bargain price (like I’d say <$20 million), then it might be worth it. But anything over that and you're probably jsut better off committing that same amount of money to another position. But those are really just nitpicks. Overall, I think you've done a good job addressing most of the holes. We'll see how it plays out and will be interesting to compare if a few months from now I'd rather have what you did vs. what the Falcons actually do.

  2. Is it just me or do you get a bad Taylor Mays esque vibe from Darron Lee? I mean I really hope Atlanta doesn’t take him. I’d be ok with almost any of those other names presented. From the tape/games I’ve watched of Lee I see poor instincts, poor spatial awareness, bad angles, and missed tackles. However, he is very fast and when he knows what he’s doing he flashes but that’s literally the only positive I see, speed. Is there something I’m missing? I honestly don’t get the Lee hype.
