As expected, the Falcons released running back Warrick Dunn today. Dunn’s release was prompted by the team’s signing of running back Michael Turner yesterday to a six-year contract. Dunn had been one of the leaders and more visible playmakers on the Falcons since 2002, but his production dropped sharply this past season.
Dunn became the 22nd running back in NFL history to surpass 10,000 rushing yards this past season. Nearly 6,000 of those coming with the Falcons during the past six seasons. Dunn came 8 yards shy of surpassing William Andrews as the team’s second all-time leading rusher with 5,979 yards. Dunn was the team’s leading rusher in 5 of the last 6 seasons, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2005 with 1416 yards, a career high. Dunn, 33, is expected to continue playing and previous reports indicate that several teams may be interested in his services.
