Allen and I are back this week to do our Week One preview of the Atlanta Falcons’ Monday Night matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Along for the ride is our third wheel, Chad Walton a.k.a. the Capologist, to help us dissect this regular-season-opening matchup.
But before we get to breaking down the Eagles game, Chad helps us recap the roster moves the Falcons made to get down to 53 players. We spend plenty of time discussing Joe Hawley’s departure and the acquisition of the fresh faces along the offensive line including Andy Levitre, Gino Gradkowski and Bryce Harris. Chad gives insight into the potential salary cap component of the decision to release Hawley that could have played a factor in why the Falcons parted ways with him. We discuss the depth in the secondary and whether or not the Falcons should have concerns behind Ricardo Allen at free safety with Robenson Therezie and Charles Godfrey. Allen is confused over the retention of Nick Williams and Chad expresses dismay over the loss of Antone Smith. We ponder how the Falcons will replace an injured Brooks Reed and whether the current options on the depth chart are worthwhile.
Once we get to the Eagles game preview (around the 30-minute mark), we discuss how much of a mismatch Julio Jones could present to the Eagles’ secondary. Our discussion centers on whether the Falcons’ lack of offensive line continuity will play a significant role in the outcome of the game, and which of the two teams can get off to the fastest start to get the other off-balance. Darren Sproles, Zach Ertz, Roddy White, play-action passing, Justin Durant, tempo and Paul Worrilow are other topics we hit before finally giving our predictions for the final score of the game.
Before we close out the podcast, we discuss the declining legacy of some of Thomas Dimitroff’s drafts, what our favorite Hawley memories are and Allen and I break down our predictions for the Falcons’ final schedule game-by-game.
