FalcFans Podcast – Ep. 156 “Bittersweet Free Agency”

FalcFans PodcastFalcFans Podcast

Allen and I are back this week to recap the Atlanta Falcons’ free-agent signings made during the first week of the 2016 offseason. We brought DBN Fanatics’ Alphonso “A.J.” Thomas and Blogging Dirty’s Curtis Hobbs along to break down all the moves.

With A.J. (at 1:40) we discussed the “bittersweet” reaction of the Falcons moves including the following topics:

  • Why Alex Mack was atop many people’s free-agent wish lists
  • Mixed reaction to Sean Weatherspoon’s return
  • Whether Matt Schaub’s presence will impact the future of the Falcons backup quarterback position
  • Does Mohamed Sanu bring more to the table than Roddy White?
  • How Kyle Shanahan might use Sanu in the offense this season
  • Were the Falcons aggressive enough securing holes at linebacker and safety?
  • Is Kemal Ishmael or Ricardo Allen the answer at safety?
  • Whether losing out on the Chris Long sweepstakes could be a bad thing

Curtis joins (at 36:30) and we get his insights into the good and bad moves the Falcons made in free agency, and hit some additional topics like:

  • Linebacker Zach Brown’s potential contributions to the Falcons defense
  • Whether Evan Mathis would make a good addition to the offensive line
  • If Vic Beasley is ready to take the next step as a pass-rusher
  • Does Ra’Shede Hageman become an afterthought along the defensive line now?
  • Is moving on from O’Brien Schofield a good decision?
  • How much trust should fans put in Kyle Shanahan moving forward?

After Curtis’ departure (at 1:27:40), Allen and I resurrect our “Around the League” segment and discuss some of the other free-agency moves we saw around the league, keeping particularly eye on some ex-Falcons like Paul Soliai, Gino Gradkowski and Brent Grimes. We also discuss how other podcasts assessed the Falcons’ controversial acquisition of Sanu.
