Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that a league source indicated that free agent tight end L.J. Smith has drawn interest from the Falcons. Smith has played with the Philadelphia Eagles the past six seasons. The Falcons are expected to be looking at upgrading the tight end position this off-season with a player that can have a greater impact in the passing game. The team showed interest in some of the top tight end prospects in the Combine last week.
This past season, Smith caught 37 passes for 298 yards and 3 touchdowns in 12 games. He has missed 10 games the past two seasons with the Eagles. He had his best two years with the Eagles in 2005 and 2006, catching a total of 111 passes for 1,293 yards and 8 touchdowns.
UPDATE: National Football Post reports that the Falcons are close to signing Smith, according to one of their reliable sources.
