Falcons Lose Allen, Welcome Back Reed For Week 4 vs. Texans

The Atlanta Falcons announced their injury report today, indicating that safety Ricardo Allen will miss Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans with a knee injury. Allen is joined by wide receiver Devin Hester (turf toe), running back Tevin Coleman (ribs) and tight end Jacob Tamme (concussion) on the injury report as those Falcons that will not play. The Falcons will however welcome back linebacker Brooks Reed against his former team this weekend.

Allen will be replaced by rookie Robenson Therezie, who has seen limited reps over the past two games as a replacement for Allen. Therezie first replaced Allen against the New York Giants after the latter was benched for a series. Against the Cowboys Allen exited the game with his knee injury, giving way to Therezie for a few snaps in the second quarter. Allen was limited all three days of practice due to that same knee injury.

Hester was able to return to practice for the first time this year coming off a turf toe injury that has caused him to miss the first three games. His return should increase the chance that he suits up next week against the Washington Redskins. He will continue to be replaced by Eric Weems as the team’s primary return specialist.

Both Coleman and Tamme were unable to practice this week due to their respective injuries. Coleman suffered his against the Giants while Tamme exited the Cowboys game. They will be replaced by running back Devonta Freeman and tight end Levine Toilolo, respectively.

Reed was expected to miss the first six weeks of the season after undergoing groin surgery, but returned to practice last week. He was a full participant in today’s practice after limited usage earlier this week. Reed had been replaced at strong-side linebacker by Nate Stupar in recent games. It remains to be seen if the Falcons fully immerse Reed back into the starting lineup given that his groin injury has been chronic since last October and the team may fear re-aggravating it.

Also on the Falcons’ injury report were running back Devonta Freeman (toe) and wide receiver Julio Jones (toe/hamstring) both of whom along with Reed were listed as probable to play against the Texans.

Freeman was limited in Wednesday and Thursday’s practices with his toe injury, but fully participated earlier today. Jones’ had been limited last week with a hamstring injury, but was bothered by an injury on the top of his toe this week. He missed Wednesday’s session, but was able to fully participate by Friday.

As for the Texans and their injury report, notably running back Arian Foster (groin) and offensive tackle Duane Brown (hand) are listed as questionable. Texans head coach Bill O’Brien indicated that both will be game-time decisions.

Three players: safety Lonnie Ballentine (knee), linebacker Akeem Dent (hamstring) and running back Jonathan Grimes (knee) will not suit up against the Falcons. Like Reed, Dent would have been playing his former team as the Falcons traded him to the Texans in June 2014.

Those players listed as probable include: guard Brand Brooks (ankle), outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (shoulder), cornerback Johnathan Joseph (hip), quarterback Ryan Mallett (chest), guard/tackle Derek Newton (ankle), safety Eddie Pleasant (thigh) and guard Xavier Su’a-Filo (calf).
