Falcons Promote RB Smith; Cut LB Anderson

Vaughn McClure of ESPN reports that the Atlanta Falcons are expected to release linebacker James Anderson, who the team signed earlier this season. Later, it was tweeted by agent David Canter, running back Jerome Smith was being promoted to the Falcons active roster from the practice squad to take Anderson’s place.

Anderson was added to the roster roughly a month ago when the Falcons placed running back Antone Smith on injured reserve. But since then, Anderson has been inactive for every game.

Smith was an undrafted rookie signed by the Falcons this spring and was added to the practice squad to start the season after minimal playing time during the preseason.

Smith’s promotion likely casts doubts on whether running back Steven Jackson will be healthy for Sunday’s season finale against the Carolina Panthers. Jackson injured his quadriceps during last week’s win over the New Orleans Saints and his status has yet to be determined.
