The Falcons defeated the Washington Redskins at home by a 31-17 score to take their record to 5-3 and remain undefeated at home. The Falcons got off to an early lead and were able to sustain it for most of the remainder of the game.
Matt Ryan led the team completing 17 of 24 passes for 135 yards with 1 touchdown and an interception. Michael Turner rushed for 166 yards on 18 carries with 2 touchdowns. Tony Gonzalez led receivers with 5 catches for 41 yards and a score. Roddy White and Aaron Stecker added 3 catches each for 27 and 22 yards, respectively.
On defense, the Falcons allowed 312 total yards, most of which came in the second half. The Redskins only had 69 total yards in the first half and three points. Jonathan Babineaux led defenders with 10 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 3 tackles for loss. John Abraham (4 tackles, 0.5 sacks), Kroy Biermann (2 tackles, 1 sack), Erik Coleman (8 tackles), Tye Hill (1 tackle, 1 interception returned for a touchdown), Chris Houston (5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 passes defended), Chevis Jackson (3 tackles, 1 sack), Curtis Lofton (8 tackles), and Mike Peterson (8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss) had noteworthy games. Hill’s interception was returned 62 yards for a score to give the Falcons a 14-0 lead.
Jason Elam connected on his lone field goal attempt of 33 yards. Michael Koenen had 3 punts for an average of 42 yards with all three being placed inside the 20-yard line. Eric Weems averaged 24.8 yards on 4 kickoff returns and 6 yards on 2 punt returns.
Next week the Falcons will take on division rival the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons beat the Panthers 28-20 in a closely contested battle in Week 2. The Falcons won their last contest at home vs. the Panthers last season, 45-28. But prior to that had lost their previous 3 home games vs. Carolina.
