As I read down further I was surprised to learn C. Wire started out as a strong safety in the league.

Yes I'll want to read that book...... The one thing I once saw Thomas D. saying was in his opinion you either had a knack
of picking good players or you didn't....... I think Bill B. has that as does Scott P.

I don't know so much about the Patriot way? A young losing team needs a Qb then if he can pick talent I like that
we go first for need... It seemed in the past the "front office" tried to build our stars like Brooking and was about to make
Boley the next one till Thomas D. traded him.....

I seem to be one of the few who is almost amazed that Thomas D. has turned us around so quickly.....I think Thomas D.
has the parts in place to keep us consistent while the Panthers keep going from first to last...... I think we're finished
being a bad team for a long time.

I'd be lying if I say I'm not surprised as well by our quick ascension. But I do think it's indicative of the power of the Quarterback. Good QB play provides huge stability for a team and organization.

Back in '08, there was talk about whether we should take a QB and build around him, or go with building the team and then finding a QB. And at the time, I wasn't sure what was the best method to do it. But most of the evidence I've seen since, particularly the rise of the Falcons and the decline of the Dolphins suggests that going with the QB first is the best way to do it.

It's interesting you mention the Panthers. It's why I think if there is any of that team turning things around they need to look at the lessons learned from the other 3 teams in their division and take a QB (Gabbert) with the No. 1 pick. I hope they take a DT like Fairley.

It is often stated that if you take a QB and miss, it sets back your organization 5-7 if not more years. But it could be argued that if you pass on a QB, it sets your organization back just as long.

I think you are right, Pudge. I was of the notion that you build the team a bit and then get your QB. But I think that you have to take my great grandfather's advice--circumtances alter cases. If the QB you want is there you get him but you don't reach because you think you've got your QB of the future. The Phins have a solid cornerstone at LT so if they can find a QB it won't be too bad but they had to pay out their nose for an OL and only hope that they don't do so poorly that they hav ea top five pick and a shot to get a premier QB. It's such an inexact science and the best of the best whiff. Bill Walsh thought Mirer was going to be the next Joe Montana. Nobody thought Tom Brady was going to be Tom Brady. As for TD, I am not sure of anyone we can point to and describe as a "steal" which is what we all dream of. He's been pretty solid with Ryan being the masterstroke thus far. Good players--esp good QBs--can make GM look mighty smart.

Well Thomas D. has not screwed up his big free agents either.... Turner has been great and I think Robinson will be even better with a year in our system.....

I'm rather impressed with Weatherspoon & Moore.... since their so young we don't know for sure, and they were
1s&2s but their hitters......I especially like the way he seems to work with coach Smith. I think their are plenty of coaches who would have got rid of Grimes, Jamaal, & Dahl and a few others......I like keeping those with possible potential around as long as possible now, yet it took them only a second to get rid of Houston..... Kinda off topic
but I just like it that Thomas D. never has seemed worried about a power struggle with the coach.

When you pick in the top 10 you just can't afford to miss.... As you know just look back at our first 40 years and its
a joke.!!

I think this is why you keep hearing on path to the draft that Carolina should take Gabbert, if they feel like he is a franchise QB. We are the example they always correlate to, but Stl/Bradford and Det/Stafford are the same deal. QB league, gotta have one, plus you need a face to build around.

Pls let us know when its buyable...peeking behind the curtain on Oz (belicheck) would be an epic read.

What I'm always the most impressed w/ is how Belicheck trades back. They didn't get those six picks out of dumb luck. It appears to me he takes the time to know the other team needs as well as his own, thus giving him the ammo even in the fast paced draft.
