Rumor Tommy Maddox may be released

Postby thescout » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:03 am

I heard this on ESPN radio about a week ago that maddox could be a cap casualty and let go.He is making 1.1 million and my question is should the falcon's try to sign him as a backup which would allow them to move Schaub in a trade? Would Maddox take a backup role to Vick and would he fit this offense?
Sometimes running the Mularkey offense makes me feel like I'm in a prison.

Maddox is a quality backup QB. He's a QB capable of taking a team to the playoffs assuming he has a solid defense and running game to supplement him. He needs that defensive help because he is a gambler. He tends to force some throws, which is why he has a 21:23 TD-INT ratio the past 3 years.

I do expect Maddox to be released, but I doubt the Falcons would be in the running for him. In fact, I believe he'll likely head to Miami to where Mike Mularkey is. He was solid in Pittsburgh during their shared years there. He has truly struggled in Ken Whisenhunt's offense thought the past 2 years, just take a look at these numbers:

49% completions, 3 TDs, 6 INTs, 54.7 rating

Maddox would definitely work as a backup. He causes headaches, but he's still probably one of the 10 best backup QBs in the league.

Atlanta won't even look at Maddox for one simple reason: He's stiff as a board and has about -10% mobility. The offense requires our quarterback to at least be able to move inside the pocket it is built for a mobile quarter.... Something Schuab is.

yeah I am not really excited about the idea of us getting Maddox....he's old, can't move, and just loves to throw balls to the other team...I don't know that our defense could survive having him on the field...
