Draft could be shaken up if Brees signs with Saints

Postby thescout » Sun Mar 12, 2006 11:18 pm

There is a rumor that Drew Brees is being heavily courted by the Saints. The Saints have said they will go all out to get Brees which means the draft could be shaken up not only at QB but since James signed with Arizona the running backs may drop.Leinhart is expected to go to saints but if they sign brees then I expect the Titans to draft Leinhart. He would be back with norm chow and how lucky would the titans be to get Leinhart. On a similar note Edgerrin james signed with Arizona which means the running backs(Deangelo williams and Lendale White could drop).Remember how Stephen Jackson dropped all the way to the Rams something could happen but not as far for these 2 running backs. My question is if Williams and or White are available come 15th pick what do you do.I can't see the Falcon's having the choice between Deangelo Williams,Jimmy Williams or Lendale White but you never know.

I guess you have to really criticque the upside of each. Can Lendale White be a back to carry a load or is he a part timer.Deangelo is a workhorse but can he be a star and Jimmy Williams is a big corner which doesn't come often can he play corner or movew to safety and be a star? Those are questions the Falcon's may have to answer come draft time.
Sometimes running the Mularkey offense makes me feel like I'm in a prison.

Actually, I have read a couple of different things on this.
1) Brees is just using the Saints to drive up the price and make the Dolphins offer more. This is really where he wants to go.
2) The Saints want to bring Brees in just for a year or so to be a transition guy. They would still draft Leinhart to groom for later.

I've heard other things, but who really knows? I guess we'll find out soon. Either way, it will shake up the draft.

Yeah, it all boils downs to the $$$ thrown at these guys.

With the Cardinals taking James, yes, it's doubtful they would still draft Williams or White, since Denny Green doesn't have a great history of using 2 backs. He'll probably still draft a RB, but not in Round 1. Teams that I think are still interested in Williams and White are 49ers (#6), Lions (#9), Browns (#12), Ravens (#13). I'm not saying all those teams will draft them, but White and Williams both have chances of solidifying their Top 10 draft status if they have good pro days. If White runs a 4.45 or faster, he's good to go. I don't recall DeAngelo's 40 time, but if it's in the low 4.4 range or lower, then he's still going to get some hard looks.

But I do agree this creates better opportunity for either player to drop to Atlanta at #15.

Interesting this talk about the RBs.... I read some reviews this weekend from PFW that had us very interested in Lawrence Maroney (Minn) with the 15th pick... this b/c he is a zone running back and well suited for our offense. The same review also had him listed as the 2nd best running back, and suggested that Deangelo Williams may no even be in the 1st round.

I guess it really depends on what we do in FA with safety and DE... I would expect though that we draft a RB on day 1, maybe in the second round

Of course it's all hearsay until we get about a week or so out from draftday

I would love to get Maroney. I have a feeling he will fall to ROund 2 because he is not super fast or powerful. Anybody that watched him play should be impressed by his skills.

Maroney is getting the same treatment basically that Marion barber got last year. A good and productive college back that at the end of the year seemed poised to be a potential late 1st round pick, but wound up falling to ROund 3. I don't expect Maroney to fall that far, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is available come pick #47.
