Former San Francisco 49er Madieu Williams is deciding to accept an offer from either the Falcons or the Washington Redskins, according to his representatives.

Veteran unrestricted free agent defensive backs James Sanders and Kelvin Hayden, recently signed with Arizona and Chicago, respectively.

Williams, who was a second-round pick back in 2004 (56th overall) out of Maryland by the Cincinnati Bengals, has started 86 games and has 12 career interceptions. Last season with the 49ers, he started 3 of 15 games that he played in.

Williams, 30, played four seasons with the Bengals and three with the Vikings before playing last season with the 49ers.

The Falcons only have four safeties on the roster in William Moore, Thomas DeCoud, Shann Schillinger and Suaesi Tuimaunei.

( Willy Mo, Sweet Knees, Shanny and Suzy now have company!)

The former DuVal High School standout from Lanham spent all of the 2011 season with the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, Williams’ stats from last year don’t jump off of the page because he spent his time as a 49er behind first-time Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson.

Selected 56th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2004 draft, Williams had an impressive rookie season recording 103 tackles. The budding star then spent three quarters of his sophomore campaign on the sidelines due to injury. Even though he would go on to sign a large six-year deal with the Vikings, injuries would continue to plague him throughout his tenure in Minnesota.

Yay! Another Broken Token!!

Oh no what in the world are the Falcons thinking? If you thought James Sanders was poor in coverage, just wait to see this guy. I don't get this signing at all, Williams has been bad ever since that injury years ago. WHY!?

It's a shame really, because Madieu was so good at Maryland and in Cincinnati, then he got hurt in Minnesota and basically just became a below average starter. As a backup, I think he can be capable. Although there are several Madieu-esque veterans the Falcons could sign, so even if he decides to sign with Washington, it should not be a big deal.

But knowing the Falcons, if they don't land Williams, they will sit on their thumbs until after the draft.

So basically the Deadskins are pulling FA talent (I know this guy isn't a major talent, more the point of) over us? Washington is a better destination over Atlanta. I just threw up in my mouth. Seriously, ALL the Dimitroff luster has worn off at this point. I am still developing my conspiracy thoery that his '08 draft was all based off of former Patriots organization knowledge and not his own.

I thought I had already reached the peak of my offseason bitterness, but I found a new precipous after reading that.

Unless you know the facts, you can't really make statements like that. Did the Redskins offer more? More guaranteed money, perhaps? A chance at a starting position? A longer deal?

Blame TD or I'm sure Cyril will blame Blank....the guy is fodder anyways. No great loss.

Widetrak, I believe he chose the Redskins because it's his hometown team. He went to high school in Lanham, and college in College Park which anybody familiar with the DC area know are adjacent suburbs. It's the equivalent of someone from Decatur who went to GA Tech choosing to sign with the Falcons.

Like I said before, there are plenty of fish in the sea. What we're looking for at safety, a guy that can potentially play both FS or SS and also help out on special teams are a dime a dozen in this league. Because what makes safety a unique position is that unlike most other positions, if you're a back-up safety you rarely play for most teams. Coupled with the constant injuries that the position incurs, it makes for constant turnover at the position. Unless you're a top-end guy like an Adrian Wilson or Eric Weddle, at some point in your career you're going to essentially become a journeyman backup.

And I don't envy the Redskins off-season one bit. Sure, they've made additions, but excluding RG3, none of them are impact guys or guys that offer upgrades over what they previously had.

I don't really either, as they'll be in the same position as us currently, for the next two years. I did read the hometown thing after posting fwiw.

Hey come on, I made up with Blank....... I think he did right; not going after free agents!!

Thomas D. should have tried to keep James Saunders, was he that bad in the nickle ?
