According to TMZ.com, police in Oceanside, California are investigating a shooting at a residence where former NFL linebacker Junior Seau is believed to be staying. The gossip website is being told by law enforcement officials that the 43-year-old Seau is dead.

Details are still unclear, but Seau appears to have taken his own life.

A former standout at USC, Seau was selected with the fifth overall pick of the 1990 by the San Diego Chargers, where he spent 13 seasons, the last twelve of which ended in trips to the Pro Bowl After a three-year stint with the Miami Dolphins, Seau briefly retired before signing a contract with the New England Patriots, where he'd spent the last four years of his 20-year career.

Seau is a member of the NFL's All-1990s team, Chargers' Hall of Fame and 50th Anniversary team, and will surely be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Life after football has been struggle for Seau, who was arrested in San Diego on domestic violence charges in October of 2010. Following his release from jail on that charge, Seau fell asleep at the wheel and drove his SUV off a cliff.

Gunshot wound to the chest, same as Dave Duerson. Likely so that his brain will be preserved and studied as part of the NFL's legacy of concussions.

Rest in peace, Junior.

This was super sad, but being out here in San Diego since 07 it was crazy to see the decline of Junior he owns a sports bar in a very popular part of town out here named Seau's. It is a great place to grab a bite and watch a ball game he used to be there frequently taking pictures and signing autographs and just asking how you were enjoying your experience. Then around 09 it all changed he was hardly ever around then the thing happened in 2010 with driving his vehicle off a cliff this was a very sad decent with a sad ending. He was a cool guy from the two or three times we encountered each other so it really sucks that he took that way out I met his son also he seemed to stay in his dad's hip pocket I know he has to be devastated. My condolences to the Seau family RIP to one of the best to ever do it.

With the recent deaths of Ray Easterling and Junior Seau, and the prominence of head-shots within the Saints bounty scandal, football-related brain injuries have returned to the news. Unfortunately for the general public, news reports don’t contain much useful information on these injuries and their causes, diagnoses, and treatments. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to listen and speak to Dr. Stefan Duma of Virginia Tech and Dr. Jeffrey Barth of the University of Virginia, both of whom are leaders in the field of head injury research.

Here’s some of what they had to say:

As far as NFL players go, this thing could get a lot worse before it gets better. Former NFL players are nearly the perfect storm for higher suicide risks.

I'm worried they'll go overboard on the violence angle. Its a violent sport. But just yesterday they're on the radio saying in essence....well hockey is all violent and nobody watches it. No violence = the pro bowl. I think removing the head shots/blindside hits is far enough.
