Sweet & Sour

Postby dirtybirdnw » Fri Nov 30, 2012 10:18 am

Last nights game was so immensely frustrating to watch. It was great that Atlanta beat the Saints which is something this team just simply had to do to prove to a small degree that they are worthy of being 11-1.

But the Falcon offense continues to spiral into oblivion. Certainly there are problems on the offensive line; but, this team came out and dominated early. Then they completely folded never to be seen from again for pretty much the entire game.

If it wasn't for the Falcon defense forcing 5 Brees interceptions (technically 6 thanks to the offsides call against Abraham) we would have been lost yet again. Also concerning is the long stretches where the Falcon defense completely disappeared. Some Saints drives ended because of poor game management and not because of great defensive stands.

Kudos to the Falcon D for all those turnovers. What I saw last night tells me this team is no where near what it was the first quarter of the season and they have a lot of work to get done before the playoffs.

In your last sentence, you said, "Team." IMHO, the defense is just as good now, if not better, than it was in the first few weeks of the season. We have been getting much better at stopping the run, and that has forced teams to be one dimensional, which has played right into our hands.

On offense, yes, there's a lot to be desired. I believe that we can fix some of that, but we have a major personnel issue on the OL, and game film has helped teams to realize just how much of a problem it is for us. Don't expect teams to let up. They will be attacking the middle of our OL for the rest of the year. We should do whatever we can to bring some help on the OL next year.

The offense is fairly middling, despite all of its potential. Their best games played over the past 6 weeks are games where they score 30 points against a bad Eagles defense, and a 19-point effort against a pretty decent Cowboys defense.

They just never seem able or willing to rise to the occasion when the pressure is on.

That will ultimately keep the Falcons from reaching their goals this season. But at least the defense seems willing to step up when the lights are on.

But unfortunately, we're basically hoping for a Jake Delhomme like meltdown to win in January if the offense winds up being status quo. Not gonna happen...But it's nice to dream.

They have 4 weeks to get things corrected. They probably won't, but you never know.
