Former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason was back in the news Monday after penning a thoughtful edition of Monday Morning Quarterback on SI.com. (Peter King is in vacation.)

Gleason, who lives with ALS, writes about the connection between football and the nerve disease, the efforts of his foundation, and his world travels. And he does it all typing with his eyes. (Just check it out.)

Somehow, this article inspired some knuckleheaded radio sports talk show hosts in Atlanta to mock Gleason. 790 A-M's "Mayhem in the Morning" ran a segment this morning where they mocked Gleason's speech, which now comes out of a computer program. They also joked about Gleason's life expectancy.

The negative reaction was immediate. Listeners complained and the radio station went into damage control mode. The radio hosts have been suspended.

"We deeply regret the comments made by Mayhem In The AM this morning on 790 The Zone regarding former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason. 790 The Zone, Lincoln Financial Media, our sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support the unfortunate and offensive commentary concerning Mr. Gleason this morning. The members of the show involved with this incident have been suspended indefinitely pending further management review of their actions," said SR VP Rick Mack in a statement.

This is what happens when sports radio shows worry more about being edgy and "unfiltered" rather than actually discussing sports. A shock jock must travel down a long road of unimpeded ignorance before arriving at a place where he believes that a segment like this is a good idea.

P.S. Steven Shapiro is despicable. He has been an embarrassment to Atlanta for 2 decades. The only reason he was ever on the radio is his father bought him a station. Then, he gambled on buying another station in St Louis, which tanked. Then he sold 790 to the company his wife worked for. At least the Dickies ( Cumulus, where I used to work) have some sense. Once the PD (A Saltzman?) tried to woo me over to 790 when I was producung the Rude Awakening on 680. At the time they were beating us in the books. Glad I never went over there. Now 92.9 the Game is eating 790's lunch, and one of the guys I worked for for about 18 months ( Jamie Dukes) is on there kicking them in the teeth. Love it.

I'm willing to make fun of anything, but there is one key thing that must be considered. The more inappropriate the topic, the funnier the joke must be to be okay. Unfortunately for these guys, the bit was very inappropriate while at the same time, not being funny at all. It was just cruel. After listening I can't believe these guys were ever on the air, inappropriate or not, they just aren't funny.

I listen to both 680 and 790 when I can, and Steve Shapiro was the most ill informed sports broadcaster I've ever encountered. The one that gets me, coming from a family of Texans, is this honest-to-god quote regarding Tony Romo.

He hasn't been the same since he was with Britney Spears

Ok, so you can't tell the difference between Jessica Simpson and Britney, but could you read enough of the literature on a QB you're supposed to know to realize that his best years came after he dumped Jessica?

No, that was beyond "Steak".

And this isn't just pro 680 anti 790 bias. Dave Archer is one of the *best* football broadcasters on radio I've ever heard, able to make sane subtle arguments, hell, able to break down plays in a manner akin to Ron Jaworski without all-22 tape.

That Chuck Oliver guy on 680 isn't bad either in his areas of expertise.

;)

As for 92.9, haven't found it to be listenable. No one fit to tie the jock strap of the two good ones I've mentioned. Maybe I've never caught Jamie when he was prepared..
