Falcons cut 11 ahead of deadline
August 25th, 2013
The team announced today the waiving of eleven players as the team must get down to the 75-player roster limit by Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons will still need to cut at least three more players between now and then to make the deadline. Most of the eleven players released were undrafted free agents including quarterback Seth Doege, running back Donald Russell, fullback Devonte Campbell, tight ends Tim Biere and Colin Cloherty, offensive linemen Jeff Nady and Matt Smith, defensive ends Cam Henderson and Brandon Thurmond, linebacker Nick Clancy, and safety Troy Sanders.
All but Biere, Cloherty, and Nady were undrafted free agents signed by the team this past April and May. Biere was signed during camp when the team reached an injury settlement with fellow tight end Tommy Gallarda. Cloherty was signed in June and is a fifth-year player. Nady was also signed during camp to replace the injured Mike Johnson on the roster. Neither Doerge, Biere, or Nady received any playing time during the Falcons three preseason games. Of those cut, Russell and Campbell probably got the most extensive playing time during the preseason. In a pair of games, Russell had three carries for 11 yards and a catch for 6 yards.
The Falcons will play one final preseason at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. The team will then have to make their final roster cuts to get down to 53 players by Saturday, after which they can establish an eight-man practice squad before the regular season begins the following week on September 8.
