The Atlanta Falcons and veteran wide receiver Roddy White have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season, the team announced Thursday

Roddy White
Roddy White agreed to a contract extension Thursday, meaning the veteran receiver will report to Falcons training camp on time.

The deal is worth up to $30 million, including $18 million over the next two seasons, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

White, who turns 33 on Nov. 2, was set to enter the last year of his contract in 2014. The four-time Pro Bowler expected an extension before training camp started on Friday.

Veterans are set to report Thursday afternoon, and White might not have showed without a new contract.

The former first-round pick had six consecutive seasons of 1,000 receiving yards prior to last season. Hamstring and ankle injuries limited him to 13 games and 711 receiving yards last season, but White picked up his production toward the end of the season.

"I want to be here, no doubt about it," White said in December. "I've spent my whole career here, and I love the organization. I love everyone in it."

Since entering the league in 2005, White's 685 receptions rank eighth among active players while his 9,436 receiving yards rank fifth. His 55 touchdown catches during that time also rank 10th in the NFL

Gotta say I'm surprised. I hope he can defy Father Time and stay healthy and produce.

So, Atlanta payed Roddy for services already rendered during his career and not for what he likely has left in the tank.

I just hope that Atlanta doesn't decide that they are done with WR for the next 4 years deciding that a 33 year-old Roddy White and a 30 (almost) year old Harry Douglas are good enough. White/Jones might be an elite WR duo but there isn't much behind those two.

I am just glad that one of my favorite Falcons of all time will presumably finish his career here in Atlanta.

Probably a safe bet since Roddy would be 37 when that deal ends. Of course, Atlanta could always release him but his cap hit improves in the last 2 years of the deal with just 12 million left on the deal. Interesting that they front loaded the deal.

I would have rather seen a 2 year deal in the $12 million range which is what the back half this deal is.

$9 million per year (assuming it was split evenly) puts Roddy into the Top 10 or 12 base salaries for receivers in 2014.

I like this move, perhaps a touch higher than I thought, but very close to what I expected. If Roddy is 100% and has 2012 form we will win some games, if this happens and Julio and Matt are also 100% healthy we will win at least 8... giving us a shot.

If Julio, Roddy, and Ryan all stay healthy and we get a closer to career average season out of S-Jax the Falcons will at least be a Wild Card team.

I'm still not entirely sure what to expect from the Falcon defense since it seems they are going with a hybrid multiple-front and we are already short our best linebacker in Weatherspoon. We at least know Trufant will be a top DB and Worrilow & Moore will take the s*** out of things. I'm not sure what to expect out of the rest of the defense. But, if the Big-3 + S-Jax all have good seasons theoretically the offense can overcome a mediocre defense to at least get into the post-season.

If nothing else our games are going to be exciting, as we will be able to score on anyone and be able to stop no one, arena football at it's finest....

True, we need to keep throwing and keep scoring when we are ahead, our D simply can't be relied upon to make a big stop..

The Falcons overpaid, but in the bigger picture it means that Roddy should retire a Falcon. Although we don't know the exact terms of the deal, it sounds like it might get a little pricey in Year 3. So it's just a two-year deal, and if Roddy wants to play a 3rd year, it might have to be with another team. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it in 2016.

An idea of what "market value" was: http://falcfans.com/predicting-roddy-wh ... sion-16569

I was just thinking do to Roddy's style I think there is a chance he can play at a high level for a few more years. Roddy's strengths are getting off the line, route running, and his hands, all of which shouldn't be affected by age. Sure he will begin to lose speed, but as long as it's not drastic, I don't think it will affect him as much as it would a receiver like Desean Jackson.

It would affect him even less if the Falcons moved him to the slot, just like Hines Ward, Anquan Boldin, and Donald Driver did at the end of their careers, which probably added at least another year or two of solid production.

Roddy should be able to play 2 or 3 more years and produce at a starter's level. Hopefully the Falcons will be smart and look to find his replacement sometime between Rounds 2 and 4 next year. But knowing the Falcons, they'll continue to hype Harry Douglas, who is almost a year older than Michael Jenkins was when we cut him.

Roddy is my favorite Falcon, and seeing the Falcons paying him 30 million
for 4 years reminds me why we can't ever win!! Roddy's 32.

A Closer Look at Roddy White’s Contract Extension
July 30th, 2014

Roddy White
Details of the new four-year contract extension signed by Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White have been revealed. White’s deal is a four-year deal that adds three more years onto a contract that was previously set to end after the 2014 season. The total worth of the deal is $23 million, but can be pushed to $31.5 million due to $8.5 million in potential escalators on his base salaries from 2015-17.
White’s deal included a $7.55 million signing bonus, which is the only guaranteed portion of the deal. From his previous contract, there is also $1.325 million leftover in prorated bonus money that will also count towards his 2014 cap figure. His new deal barely affects the Falcons 2014 salary cap. Prior to his extension, White was set to count $6.325 million against the team’s cap. This deal only nets the Falcons cap savings of $112,500 this season.

In 2015, White will receive a $500,000 roster bonus on June 3. He is also due per-game roster bonuses of $46,875 if he appears on the 53-man roster each week. That translates to mean that assuming White makes the roster (a very, very safe assumption) and is not on a reserve list such as the injured reserve, he will earn that bonus each week. Those are worth up to $750,000 if he is on the 53-man roster for the entire season. If White is active on the Falcons 46-man roster each week, he will receive additional gameday roster bonuses of $15,625 which could be worth up to $250,000 for the entire season. White will earn those bonuses if he is active each Sunday, basically dependent on if he’s healthy enough to play each week.

In 2016 and 2017, White’s gameday 53-man roster bonuses increase to $62,500 for season totals up to $1 million. His 46-man roster bonuses will be $31,250 worth up to $500,000 for each season.

Essentially, the deal makes it very likely that White will play at least the next two seasons with the Falcons. In 2016, the Falcons could potentially release a then 34-year old White and save $2.3625 million against their salary cap. The team could save up to $4.5 million in cap space if White is released prior to the 2017 season. The Falcons could release White next offseason, if they designate him a post-June 1 release in 2015 but that seems unlikely. There is a fairly good chance that White will play out the life of his contract, since his cap hits marginally increase from where it stands now. There is expected to be a significant increase in the salary cap limit starting in 2016.

Year
Base Salary
Signing Bonus
Roster Bonus
Gameday Bonuses
Cap Hit
Escalators
2014 $3,000,000 $3,212,500 $0 $0 $6,212,500 $0
2015 $2,200,000 $1,887,500 $500,000 $1,000,000 $5,587,500 $3,250,000
2016 $2,750,000 $1,887,500 $0 $1,500,000 $6,137,500 $2,625,000
2017 $3,000,000 $1,887,500 $0 $1,500,000 $6,387,500 $2,625,000
TOTALS $10,950,000 $8,875,000 $500,000 $4,000,000 $24,325,000 $8,500,000

The fact that there isn't much guaranteed money in the deal makes me more amendable to the contract.

At least if Roddy's performance noses dives in the next year or two they can cut him loose and not take a mega-hit on the cap. Pay him like a top receiver and let him go if his performance doesn't match up.
