Steroids to mar Panthers season?

Postby Pudge » Thu Mar 31, 2005 11:34 am

I'm sure you've all heard by now the allegations that at least 3 Panther players received prescriptions from steroid jockey MD James Shortt.

I'm wondering if this is going to prove a significant distraction for the team. The 3 players fingered were P Todd Sauerbrun, C Jeff Mitchell, and T Todd Steussie. Steussie is no longer with the team team, but Sauerbrun and Mitchell are. But it seemed likely that even without these allegations, Sauerbrun and Mitchell may have been playing their last years in Carolina anyway.

Do you think all this is going to hurt the Panthers season? I don't see how much it will help them, but I think it has the potential to be damaging. Sauerbrun, a Pro Bowl punter, and Mitchell the leader of your offensive line are significant contributors. And this is only 3 players, there could be more.

The Panthers have been a team that has been bit hard by the "character" bug over the years. They've had numerous DUIs among players, players have been suspended for substance abuse (including Julius Peppers), I think there have been some domestic violence cases as well, and now you have this.

Now I don't want to paint the picture that I think the Panthers are a bunch of thugs, cheaters, and hooligans, because bottom line I believe most NFL teams have the same type and number of transgressors on their rosters. The Panthers biggest problem is that their guys just keep getting caught.

With the healthy return of Steve Smith, Kris Jenkins, DeShaun Foster, and additions like Ken Lucas, Marlon McCree, and Mike Wahle, I thought the Panthers would be in prime position to challenge for the NFC South title. Assuming their OL and RB woes are over, this is a team that is better than it was in 2003 when they almost won the Super Bowl. They are a team that could cause a lot of trouble for us. But it would seem they need to sort out their own internal problems before they can...
