Good article on why we have big receivers as opposed to small burners. I believed we discussed this a few weeks ago....

A few highlights....

"That is how the game has evolved. We've got guys that can run and can make plays over defensive backs that are 5 feet 8, 5 feet 9. Our size also helps our offense because it gives our quarterback targets to see down the field."

Vick is 6 feet, but he has to see over 6-4 linemen — when he's in the pocket. He's often on the move, shrinking his visibility lanes, especially because the Falcons' version of the West Coast offense calls on receivers to run routes in high-traffic zones.



and...

"The reason we wanted big receivers is based on the offense," president and general manager Rich McKay said. "The ability to block and be a factor on the inside is a huge factor. In the passing game, tall guys present huge targets as they cross the field. In the West Coast offense, you have so many horizontal routes and you have so many guys crossing the field that you need bigger targets."

Agreed, I think there is much less risk when putting a big WR out there. Small guys just aren't cutting it these days.

Well I think it depends on the QB. The Colts have been able to have success with WRs that by most standards are considered small: Marvin Harrison (6-0/175), Reggie Wayne (6-0/195), Brandon Stokley (5-11/195), and Troy Walters (5-7/170) as are the Patriots: David Givens (6-0/215), Deion Branch (5-9/195), Troy Brown (5-10/195), and Andre Davis (6-1/195). Is it a coincidence at the size of their QBs that are 6-5 and 6-4?

I think there is a parrallel there.
