Official Week 6-Saints Game Discussion Thread

Postby Pudge » Tue Oct 11, 2005 12:37 pm

Might as well get this thing "officially" started.

This week's rival site is Saints Revolution and their forums can be found by clicking here.

Deuce McAllister is done for the year with a torn ACL. Antowain Smith and Aaron Stecker will replace him. I'm not so worried about Smith, he's a 2/3 yards and a cloud of dust type runner. Stecker could be more dangerous since he has homerun speed. Neither are great runners, but pretty good #2s and considering how awesome  our run defense has been all season long, both are capable of combining for over 100 yards.

No ill will wished upon McAllister, but I can at least breath a sigh of relief. With our run defense's current play, you could almost guarantee McAllister would have rushed for over 100 yards this week, because he almost always does vs. ATL.

Another injury of note is RT Jammal Brown I believe is questionable this week. That means utility lineman Jamar Nesbit could take over at RT. Hopefully, unlike they did in Week 3 vs. Buffalo, Kerney can really take advantage of a backup RT.

Now we have questions of whether Vick will play. He's 3-0 vs. New Orleans, Schaub is 0-1. I'm confident Schaub can beat the Saints, but that doesn't mean I want to test my theory. I think Mora should start Vick, but possibly with him on a short leash. if the knee is a problem, then I think he should pull him.

We'll need to do a better job putting pressure on the QB this week. Brooks is much more prone to mistakes than Brady, and without a reliable running game to take pressure off him, we might actually rout the Saints for the first time in forever this week.

Early week prediction:

With Vick

Falcons 30
Saints 13

Without Vick

Falcons 24
Saints 17

The Ain'ts did make a deal for Miami RB Jesse Chatman for a condtional 7th round pick. Chatman has been a 3rd down back most his career. We thought Duckett was big; Chatman is just 5'8" and is 245lbs just about 7lbs shy of TJ who is roughly 3 inches taller.

the question this week will be the same question I ask all year....will we be able to run the ball...I think we will be able to since I am not impressed with a single lb or dt on that team....Their DE's do scare me though which makes it even more important that we can run the ball to slow them down a little bit...is Joe Horn still hurt? He, like McAllister, always gives the Falcons fits...I think we can control this game from start to finish if we can establish the run...if we do that I think we win by two scores with or without Vick...

If you ask me just give the rock to Dunn all day long. If he gets 25 to 30 carries in this game we win it.

Warrick Dunn vs. New Orleans (With Atlanta):
2002 Game 1: 23 Carries, 142 Yards, 6.2 YPC, 1 TD, 5 Receptions for 28 Yards
2002 Game 2: 26 Carries, 90 Yards, 3.5 YPC, 4 Receptions for 29 Yards
2003 Game 1: 6 Carries, 82 Yards, 13.7 YPC, 1 TD, 2 Receptions for 8 Yards
2003 Game 2: 23 Carries, 162 Yards, 7 YPC, 2 Receptions, 23 Yards
2004 Game 1: 11 Carries, 59 Yards, 5.4 YPC, 2 Receptions, 22 Yards
2004 Game 2: 18 Carries, 52 Yards, 2.9 YPC, 1 TD, 6 Receptions, 87 Yards

Dunn averages 17.8 Carries, 97 Yards, 6.45 YPC, .5 TD's against New Orleans. If Dunn gets 23 carries or more we win against New Orleans (Save for 03 when Johnson & Kittner started). Dunn is also usually pretty good for a few 20+ runs against New Orleans.

Sidenote: Dunn is currently on pace for a career year with a 5.4 YPC and projected 1,537 yards rushing and 13 20+ yard runs.

I agree we should just try to stuff the ball down their throats...they are weak up the middle, and off the edges for that matter...they don't have a lb on their entire roster that impresses me....so long we don't get stuck in a lot of obvious passing situations we can nullify those great pass rushing DE's....(by the way, I think we should look into getting one of those three DE's in the offseason)

I suspect Horn will play. From what I heard earlier this week, Horn is saying all the right things that indicate he is going to play this week. Even if he's less than 100%, I can't imagine Haz heaping all the offensive production on Brooks shoulders if both Horn and Deuce are out. Horn historically has performed well vs. Atlanta, and I would say the Saints have even a worse shot (it already is pretty low) at winning this game without him.

I'm expecting the defense is going to bounce back after a bad performance last week. With Mora and Donatell leading, I can't imagine seeing a defense this talented having consecutive bad games.

It'll be interesting to see how Morton and Rossum match up with the speed of Saints backup WRs in Devery Henderson and Az Hakim. Both guys have big play potential, and Mora and Donatell will have to work hard to keep those guys off islands.

The Saints might find success by using a lot of 3 and 4-WR sets. The Falcons are weak this week, with injuries to Cash, Hartwell, Vick, Kerney and Weiner. Luckily the Saints are weaker with injuries to Deuce, Horn, Jammal Brown, Fakhir Brown, Bellamy, etc.

The key this week is going to be running the football. If Dunn/Duckett play well, I see no reason why the Falcons won't win.

If McAllister started this week I honestly don't think we would have won this game without Hartwell around the middle. He would have run allllll over us. But with McAllister out I don't see us losing.

Why isn't Rod Coleman racking up the sacks like last year?

Is it the age factor? Or people are just getting smarter(Learning his styles)

You might want to reconsider that statement when you consider this:

2004 Coleman Numbers:

first 5 games: 14 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 FF, 1 FR, 0 PD

2005 Coleman Numbers:

first 5 games: 12 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 FF, 0 FR, 3 PD

Rod is doing just fine...

I don't have much room to talk after last week's ass-kicking, but you guys seriously underestimate the underdog here. Furthermore, they've heard about that beatdown all weekend and how they can't win without Deuce, as if he was having a great year or something. We'll see, but don't be surprised if you guys leave San Antonio with a loss!

Not only would I be surprised, I would be shocked, horrified, and disgusted if we lost to your team. With Deuce out, Jammal hurt, Horn possibly still hurting, Brooks playing QB, and your general lack of anything remotely qualifying as a defense, I think I would say fire the entire coaching staff if we lose either game to you this year.

We still can't tackle. We had Smith about two or three times in the back field and once at the line of scrimmage. If our defense can't tackle we won't win.

I can't believe how absolutely horrible our defense has been so far this year. Smith went practically untouched UP THE MIDDLE for a touchdown.

Words can't describe how pissed off I am right now.

This is going to be an ugly game the way it is shaping up. Somehow we've actually managed to regress.

Oh and by the way that tip for an INT is completely on Dez White. He should have caught that pass.

BENCH HIS WORTHLESS ASS.

He know has 2 drops and 1 caused an INT. He's HELPING the Saints.

I am so f-in sick of DEZ WHITE starting. 3 drops, one blanket coverage on a deep ball, and one of the drops goes for a pick. Where is Finneran & why the hell isn't Mora playing him?

Vick is getting killed and our defense looks average at best again because they can't stop a run up the middle.

OMG WE SUCK.

I think the only time Vick hasn't been hit is when we ran the ball. Maybe we need Schuab in because Vick isn't himself today. Either the Saints coverage is that good or Vick is hesitating way too much.
