NEEDS RATING KEY

5.0 - High priority. This is a position that is a glaring weakness and there is the likelihood that this team cannot compete next year without making a major addition here.

4.0 - Medium Priority. This is an area that is an obvious weakness, but the team isn't quite desperate to make a major move here possibly because they have some young potential. But this is an area that if the team cannot fix via free agency, will definitely use one of their picks in the first three or four rounds to supplement.

3.0 - Upgrade Potential. This is a position that isn't a weakness per se, but there is significant room for an upgrade. If the right player comes along they will certainly snag him, but if they don't fix this position with a major free agent addition or early round pick, then it's not the end of the world.

2.0 - Depth Need. An area where there is a need to add depth. Perhaps there is an aging veteran and they might want to start to look at grooming his heir apparent or replacement. Not likely to be a high priority and a position that more than likely will be address in the middle and late rounds rather than with a top pick.

1.0 - Future Need. This is an area that is not a priority, and doesn't initially appear as a need. But there is some room to develop some depth for perhaps two or more years down the line. This is usually an area that a team will look at in the late rounds if at all.

0.0 - Non-need. This is a position that is a strength of their team, they have a solid starter, capable depth, and/or a young player at the position that they like and want to develop. Very little possibility this area is addressed and would be the equivalent of a wasted draft pick.

Top 7 Needs

1. QB - 5.0
2. WR - 4.5
3. LB - 4.0
4. RB - 3.0
5. OT - 3.0
6. CB - 3.0
7. DT - 3.0

Position by Position Breakdown

Quarterback - The debacle with McNabb is expected to end this off-season, with the team trying to move him for some sort of compensation. Grossman is a free agent and could be brought back for the sake of depth and insurance. But his play down the stretch wasn't good enough that they should consider him more than a stopgap. The concern for the Redskins will be whether or not SHanahan wants to go after a veteran or go into the draft. The pickings are a bit slim as far as the veterans are concerned, and with their spot in the draft they may not be in a position to get the guy they really want. This is a major concern for the team and what they do here will define the rest of Shanahan's term as a head coach and this franchise's direction over the next half-decade. NEED: 5.0

Running Back - Portis was productive early in the year, but he'll be 30 at the start of next season and despite Shanahan's familiarity with him, his value is limited at this point. That means they could turn the keys over to Ryan Torain, who had his moments. Keiland Williams is another young option to have. In Denver, Shanahan rarely invested heavily in this posiiton, and it would seem likely that will be the case in Washington. But they will certainly add at least one player here. NEED: 3.0

Fullback - Sellers is a solid lead blocker, but he's going to be 36 next year, and the Broncos should be on the lookout for his future replacement. The team moved linebacker Darrel Young to this position, and he might be an option. NEED: 1.5

Wide Receiver - Moss is their top player but is a free agent, so they will have to make a decision whether they the soon-to-be 32 year old free agent. They probably want him back, but won't bend over backwards to re-sign him. If not, then they are devoid of much talent here. Malcolm Kelly has been a major disappointment, and getting playmakers at this position will likely be a priority second only to the quarterback position. NEED: 4.5

Tight End - Cooley had a good year and made it through the season injury free. Fred Davis is a capable backup. They might look to add more depth here late in the draft, but it's not a real need. NEED: 1.0

Offensive Tackle - Trent Williams wasn't great as a rookie, but had enough of his moments that the team feels confident it can move forward with him at left tackle. Jammal Brown was picked up via trade in the summer and is a free agent. Coming off an injury, he was slowed early in the year, but his play picked up towards the end. Enough so that the Redskins could want to bring him back, but he probably won't come cheap. If not, then that would leave Stephon Heyer as their top option, and he is much better used as a swing tackle and reserve than as a starter. If Brown departs, expect this position to be a priority in the off-season. NEED: 3.0

Offensive Guard - The team went with a youth movement for the latter half of the season with starters Kory Lichtensteiger and Will Montgomery. Montgomery appears to be a keeper, and Lichtensteiger is young enough that they probably could develop him more. Dockery is likely done in Washington. HIcks should be back just because he's a versatile reserve. But they should probably add some depth in the draft as insurance. NEED: 2.0

Center - Rabach is entering the last year of his deal, and while the team values his experience and leadership, the time seems appropriate to at the very least draft or sign his future replacement. If he does return, this certainy will be his last year in Washington. NEED: 2.5

Defensive Tackle - Haynesworth will be dumped in the off-season, and Kemoeatu didn't do much before he was sidelined with an injury. Finding a new nose tackle will be a priority this off-season that they can try and develop long-term as a fixture here. NEED: 3.0

Defensive End - While this position is not a strength, relative to their other glaring weaknesses on defense, it'll have to do. Carriker and Holliday will likely enter next year as the starters. Kedric Golston is a free agent, and probably won't be retained. They would love to draft or sign some depth here to help them out. NEED: 2.0

Linebacker - Carter is probably not going to be retained. He was a bad fit in the 3-4. McIntosh is a free agent, and many don't expect him to be back in a Redskin uniform next year. He was productive, but the team might try and turn over the keys to youngster Perry Riley, who was untested. London Fletcher remains a fixture in the middle and Brian Orakpo on the outside. But the team will likely prioritize finding another pass rusher to put opposite Orakpo and probably add another body inside as insurance and depth. NEED: 4.0

Cornerback - Both Hall and Rogers are free agents. Neither seem to be great long-term options, but given the limited amount of draft picks the Redskins have, they probably can't afford to let both walk. So they will have a decision to make of which to keep. Rogers is the more sound player, but Hall is the playmaker. Kevin Barnes would be the likeliest candidate currently on the roster to fill in for whichever departs, but they will add another player to push him. NEED: 3.0

Safety - Injuries hurt them at this position. Landry should be back at strong safety. Kareem Moore wasn't as effective as hoped at free safety, but they have options with Chris Horton, Macho Harris, and Landry's ability to play both positions. Given their other needs, this won't be a priority, but they would love to add a ballhawking free safety that can be a long-term fixture. NEED: 1.5

Kicker - Graham Gano had his struggles. He's still young and probably worth another look, but the team will definitely prioritize bringing in someone to push him if not outright replace him. NEED: 2.0

Punter - Both Bidwell and Paulescu should be back next year to compete for this spot. NEED: 1.0
