Team Needs: Kansas City Chiefs

NEEDS RATING KEY

5.0 - High priority. This is a position that is a glaring weakness and there is the likelihood that this team cannot compete next year without making a major addition here.

4.0 - Medium Priority. This is an area that is an obvious weakness, but the team isn't quite desperate to make a major move here possibly because they have some young potential. But this is an area that if the team cannot fix via free agency, will definitely use one of their picks in the first three or four rounds to supplement.

3.0 - Upgrade Potential. This is a position that isn't a weakness per se, but there is significant room for an upgrade. If the right player comes along they will certainly snag him, but if they don't fix this position with a major free agent addition or early round pick, then it's not the end of the world.

2.0 - Depth Need. An area where there is a need to add depth. Perhaps there is an aging veteran and they might want to start to look at grooming his heir apparent or replacement. Not likely to be a high priority and a position that more than likely will be address in the middle and late rounds rather than with a top pick.

1.0 - Future Need. This is an area that is not a priority, and doesn't initially appear as a need. But there is some room to develop some depth for perhaps two or more years down the line. This is usually an area that a team will look at in the late rounds if at all.

0.0 - Non-need. This is a position that is a strength of their team, they have a solid starter, capable depth, and/or a young player at the position that they like and want to develop. Very little possibility this area is addressed and would be the equivalent of a wasted draft pick.

Top 10 Needs

1. OT - 4.0
2. DT - 4.0
3. DE - 3.0
4. RB - 2.0
5. S - 2.0
6. QB - 2.0
7. WR - 1.5
8. TE - 1.5
9. LB - 1.5
10. FB - 1.5

Quarterback - The Chiefs want to bring in another quarterback to push Matt Cassel, although the job is still very much Cassel's to lose. That player could be in-house with Kyle Orton, or it could be another veteran such as Chad Henne who is knowledgeable of new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll's scheme. But either way, they are expected to add one significant veteran piece. NEED: 2.0

Running Back - Getting Jamaal Charles back from injury certainly will provide a big boost to this position. Thomas Jones is proably not going to be back as he was surpassed by Jackie Battle as the team's top runner. Battle is also a free agent and would provide much needed depth here, but you can expect them to also target some draft picks to solidify this spot since they don't want to be caught with their pants down like they were when Charles got hurt. NEED: 2.0

Fullback - McClain is a free agent and probably could come back since he's a solid lead blocker. NEED: 1.5

Wide Receiver - Dwayne Bowe is a free agent and high priority to retain. Without keeping him, this would become a major need. If they do keep him, they can be fairly content with him, Jon Baldwin, and Steve Breaston as their top trio next year, with Dexter McCluster continuing as their hybrid RB/slot WR. Jerheme Urban was a favorite of Todd Haley, and thus probably won't be back. NEED: 1.5

Tight End - Getting Tony Moeaki back should solidify this spot. They'll just have to decide if they want to retain free agent Leonard Pope or look elsewhere for the No. 2 spot. NEED: 1.5

Offensive Tackle - Barry Richardson, a free agent, showed no improvement in his second year as the starting right tackle, which will prompt them to try and upgrade that spot. They could tinker with moving Branden Albert there, but that would require them to find a better option at left tackle. NEED: 4.0

Offensive Guard - The starting pair of Ryan Lilja and Jon Asamoah is solid, and besides looking at some developmental depth in the draft, this is not a need. NEED: 1.0

Center - Casey Wiegmann is a free agent and expected to retire this off-season. The team drafted Rodney Hudson for this exact purpose last year, and he'll likely be the frontrunner to replace Wiegmann. If anything, they could add some veteran insurance in free agency. NEED: 1.5

Defensive Tackle - Nose man Kelly Gregg is expected to retire, which will leave little-used second-year man Jerrell Powe as their next best option. Given the quality of veteran nose tackles available in free agency, it's likely the Chiefs will target one to at least act as a stopgap. NEED: 4.0

Defensive End - Wallace Gilberry is a solid situational pass rusher, but he's a free agent and his production fell from 7 sacks in 2010 to 2.5 in 2011. Glen Dorsey and Tyson Jackson showed they are decent starters this year because they are tough against the run, but neither provide the sort of pass rushing ability up front this team wants. Allen Bailey is also in the mix, meaning that this is proabbly a position they would prefer to find a steady vet than going down the draft route again. NEED: 3.0

Linebacker - They like Belcher and Derrick Johnson in the middle, of course love Tamba Hali outside, and Justin Houston showcased some pass rushing skills late in the year, making this position relatively secure. If anything they might add some veteran depth on the outside since Houston is still young. They might also draft some depth inside, since Belcher is entering a contract year, as are top backups Brandon Siler and Demorrio Williams. NEED: 1.5

Cornerback - The recent addition of Stanford Routt likely kills any chance Brandon Carr is a Chief next year. Brandon Flowers, Javier Arenas, and Jalil Brown's presence s make this position a non-need, but the Chiefs will never shy from adding another developmental corner in the draft. NEED: 1.0

Safety - Eric Berry only played five snaps this year, and his absence left a huge void in the secondary. While Kendrick Lewis is a competent starter at the other spot, they do need to bolster depth here. NEED: 2.0

Kicker - Ryan Succop was just awarded a six-year extension in December. NEED: 0.0

Punter - Dustin Colquitt is one of the best young punters in the game, and should be in line for an extension since he's entering the final year of his rookie deal. NEED: 0.5

Return Specialist - McCluster and Arenas give them a dangerous pair of returners, but neither have been as productive returning kicks as hoped. So they might look at kick return specialists this off-season. NEED: 1.5
