VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Former Florida State cornerback Greg Reid has enrolled at Division II Valdosta State and is practicing with the team.

By transferring out of the FBS, Reid does not need to sit out and is eligible to play this season for the Blazers.

Reid was dismissed from the team at Florida State earlier this month for a violation of team rules. The senior had been charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a valid license after a traffic stop in Valdosta in July. Reid was also suspended one game last season for a team rules violation.

Reid led the nation in punt return average as a freshman and needed 313 yards to break Deion Sanders' Florida State record of 1,429 yards on punt returns.

When Reid first went to Tallahasee, there was a ton of hype that went with him. And while he's been an excellent returner and a solid corner, he hasn't quite been the next Deion Sanders, which I think some comparisons were made a few years back.

But I do like Reid's game despite not being very big (5-8). He is very athletic in that sort of Brent Grimes mold, so there's a chance he could stick as a reserve corner at the next level despite the fact that at first glance he just seems like the next Allen Rossum.

Ex-Seminole Greg Reid tears ACL, out for 2012

By Dane Brugler | NFLDraftScout.com Senior Analyst
August 29, 2012 12:37 pm ET

It's been a rough summer for Greg Reid. Only a few weeks after being dismissed by Florida State, the Valdosta State senior cornerback tore his ACL in the final preseason scrimmage, ending his 2012 season. The injury was confirmed Wednesday morning by head coach David Dean.

The former Seminole hurt his knee returning a punt in a non-contact drill last Friday, but the severity of the injury wasn't immediately known. Prior to the injury, Reid was NFLDraftScout.com's No. 27-rated cornerback for the 2013 NFL Draft.

A native of Valdosta, Ga., Reid joined the Valdosta State program on August 14, a few weeks after he was kicked off Florida State's team for a violation of team rules. He has been arrested twice in the past year, including misdemeanor traffic violations and misdemeanor marijuana possession in July. By his own admission, Reid had made some “dumb mistakes” and accepted his dismissal as a fresh start. But the injury currently puts his NFL future in limbo.

Despite his smallish frame (listed at 5-8, 188), Reid is a tough, scrappy cornerback and also excelled as a punt returner. At the time of his dismissal from FSU, he needed just 313 punt return yards to match the school record held by Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Reid, who would likely receive a medical redshirt year by the NCAA if he applied, has yet to announce whether he will return to college football or start preparations for the NFL. However, rehabbing from an ACL injury is usually an 8-10 month process and it is unlikely that Reid would be available to work out prior to next April's draft.
