BO THRAN
6-5/295
Oregon Senior
40: 5.04

PROS:

Shows decent athleticism and moves well in space. Gets to the second level and gets the seal against the linebacker. Is able to pull and get out in front of screens. Shows potential as a cut blocker. Shows ability to get position as a run blocker, particularly when he's blocking in space. Shows decent footwork to match up with speed and sets up fairly well. Flashes mean streak and shows ability to finish his blocks.

CONS:

Undersized and needs to get stronger. Doesn't get much push as a run blocker because he doesn't play with good pop. Struggles in a short-area and doesn't do a good job initiating contact either as a run blocker or pass protector. Needs to improve his punch and struggles to redirect pass rushers. Gives up too much ground at times off the edge by the bull rush. Will give up the quick inside move, or end can go right around him wide. Needs to take better angles in space and has some trouble adjusting to a moving target on the second level. Misses too many assignments when cut blocking and pulling outside. Can't consistently lock on as a run blocker.

OVERVIEW:

Thran was a capable and fairly consistent blocker for Oregon at left tackle. But the Ducks blocking scheme doesn't directly translate well to the next level. He'll likely have to move inside to be successful. He started 30 games the past two seasons, most of which came at left tackle. Combined for 20 starts at left tackle, 9 at left guard, and 1 at right tackle.

NFL FORECAST:

Thran probably projects best as a guard at the next level. He just doesn't have the ideal size and speed to match up with ends on the edge. But he also doesn't have the ability to work in a short area that you like him on the inside either. The best way for him to produce at the next level is going to a zone blocking scheme. THat is similar to what he did at Oregon. But he was mostly asked to pull, cut block, and hit his assignments on the second level. That had him blocking in space quite a bit, which he was OK at, but will struggle against NFL quality talent. If Thran can improve his punch and hands, then I think he can be a capable inside presence at guard, with some ability to also play on the outside in a zone blocking scheme. But he needs time to develop and probably shouldn't be expected to make much contribution until his third season. So you might have to stash him on the depth chart or practice squad until then. He seems more like the type of player that becomes a journeyman guard. Not quite good enough to stick long-term, but can add some depth in some systems and thus should be able to get opportunities.

ATL FORECAST:

Thran isn't a good fit here in Atlanta. His ability to pull and block on the second level gives him a chance as a guard in the Falcons system. But he needs to definitely get stronger and improve his technique and hand use. If he was to bulk up to around 305-310 pound range, I think he would stand a decent shot at being able to stick as a reserve. But there are likely to be better options that will come along and prevent him from sticking long-term. Instead, he's a guy that will likely have to make the Falcons practice squad early and then perhaps three years down the road with development, can stick as a backup. But that's probably all he'll ever be in Atlanta, and just average depth at that.

VALUE:

If a zone-blocking team is desperate for depth at guard, Thran might merit a late seventh round pick. But he's better value as an undrafted free agent.
