PIERRE ALLEN
6-4/273
Nebraska Senior
40: 4.80 (estimated)

PROS:

Has a decent first step and shows some straight-line burst off the edge. Plays with a good motor and keeps working to the ball and quarterback. Shows ability to make plays on the backside pursuit and keeps working laterally down the line. Shows some ability to get leverage at the point of attack vs. the run.

CONS:

Struggles to get off blocks and make plays at the point of attack. Gets jolted back by the tight end at the point of attack and struggles at times to set the edge. Doesn't have the burst or short-area burst to turn the corner. Doesn't always get a good jump off the snap, which limits his ability to get leverage vs. the run and beat the tackle on the edge as a pass rusher. Lacks the hips, athleticism, or range to really make an impact in space. Struggles to disengage as a pass rusher and gets ridden wide and redirected.

OVERVIEW:

Allen was listed closer to 265 at Nebraska, so his 273 at the Senior Bowl suggests he's committed to playing defensive end rather than converting to outside linebacker. Which is a good move for his future. He was a three-year starter. His production dropped off slightly this past year as he had 65 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks after a 51 tackle, 12 for loss, and 5 sacks, and I contribute it to the lack of Suh on the line. Allen is a nice player, but was never really an impact player for Nebraska. He has a four-year old son.

NFL FORECAST:

Allen is a player that was smart to bulk up, because he lacks the pass rushing potential to be an impact pass rusher. He's going to have to get better defending the run. At times watching him, you would think that he was more like 245 when it came to playing the run. I think he has potential to develop there, but he'll be a work in progress. Ultimately, the hope for Allen is that with his strong motor and if he develops the ability to be a better run defender, then he can be a nice rotation player and a clone of Chauncey Davis. As a pass rusher, he has some potential as a bull rusher, but lacks the short-area burst to consistently challenge the edge. He'll be lucky to have more than 2-3 sacks in a season. He's a guy that I think can develop down the road as a solid rotation player, but I'm not convinced he's a guy that will stick right away, but by his third summer or so, I see him finding a niche as a No. 4 defensive end somewhere. But unless a team falls in love with his motor, he's going to have difficulty sticking long-term with one team and he'll likely be a journeyman.

ATL FORECAST:

Allen would be a nice developmental replacement for Davis as the fourth guy in their defensive end rotation, but he offers little that is an improvement over Davis. He doesn't look like he's going to be an upgrade as a pass rusher or run defender. The best you could probably hope is he makes the practice squad, stick around for a summer or two, and then stick as the fourth guy in the rotation to provide help on run downs.

VALUE:

Because he can make a rotation, Allen is a decent late round prospect, but would be a reach before the sixth or seventh round.

SKILLS:
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Strength: 2.0
Quickness: 2.5
Pass Rush: 2.0
Point of Attack: 2.0
Recognition: 2.5
Motor: 3.5
