KAI FORBATH
5-11/191
UCLA Senior

PROS:

Has good leg strength and range to kick from beyond 50 yards. Makes practically everything inside 45 with relative ease. Seems to do a good job adjusting for wind, showing potential to kick in the elements and still have the range to kick the long ball.

CONS:

Will struggle at times with longer kicks and his accuracy. Will put too much air at times on his longer kicks that tend to hang up and stray off target.

OVERVIEW:

Forbath was a very consistent and accurate kicker over his career at UCLA, connecting on 84.2% of his 101 career attempts. He made 39 straight field goals inside 50 yards between his sophomore and senior year. His production dipped as a senior, because he had a bit more inconstency kicking in the 40-49 yard range, making only 6 of 11 there after going 10 of 11 the previous two years combined. But under 40, he was supremely accurate only missing 4 out of 58 attempts in his career, without a miss his last two years. Had a career long of 54 as a freshman, and made 10 of 13 from over 50 yards throughout his career. Hit at least two game-winners during his career, including a 51-yarder as a senior. Did not handle kickoffs, with only 7 attempts there.

NFL FORECAST:

Forbath has the leg strength and accuracy to be a productive NFL kicker. His range approaches 55 yards, although I'm not convinced he'll be as money from beyond 45 yards as he was throughout most of his college career. But as he hones his craft, he should be a guy that is very consistent inside 45 yards and hits most of his kicks from beyond. The main issue with him going forward is whether or not he is going to be a bonafide clutch kicker. But as usual, that is something that develops over the course of a kicker's career and inconsistency in that realm plagues young kickers. His lack of experience as a kickoff specialist hurts him as he'll probably be mediocre there at the next level, since he had only marginal production there the few times he did that at UCLA. So a team that has a punter that can handle those duties will be the best fit for him, or at least playing on a team that is willing to carry a third kicker as a kickoff specialist. There are only four teams like that in the league: Atlanta, Indianapolis, New Orleans, and Carolina, all of whom have aging or inconsistent field goal kickers, which gives him a chance. It's not that he's incapable of kicking off, it's just that he has shown little to date to suggest he'll be good enough there to hold that job for more than a couple of seasons, and eventually a team is going to have to find another kickoff specialist if they don't want to have bad special teams.

ATL FORECAST:

Forbath could work well in Atlanta. He's not going to be as consistent or reliable as Bryant is right away, but has the potential to be a very good, accurate kicker inside the dome. The presence of Koenen as the team's kickoff specialist means that his inability on kickoffs is not a major negative with him going forward. If the Falcons chose not to keep Bryant this off-season, then a guy like Forbath is a good young option going forward that could be a fixture as a kicker in Atlanta for years to come.

VALUE:

If a team already has a kickoff specialist in place, then Forbath is worth a draft pick potentially as high as the fifth or sixth round. If not, then he's a good enough field goal guy to merit a seventh round pick.

SKILLS
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Leg Strength: 4.0
Accuracy: 4.0
Kick-Offs: 2.0
Clutch Kicking: 3.5
