DEREK EPPERSON
6-3/237
Baylor Senior

PROS:

Shows good leg strength to kick his team out of trouble. Shows ability to get hangtime to pin teams deep on the short field and shows some potential as a directional punter, working the sideline. Does a nice job recovering from bad snaps to boot the ball away quickly.

CONS:

Will boot too many line drives and not always consistent getting great hangtime. Can be a bit methodical in his set up at times.

OVERVIEW:

Epperson definitely has the tools to stick at the next level and the upside to be one of the better punters in the league, if he can improve his accuracy, directional kicking ability, and particularly his consistency. He had only one of his 224 punts blocked during his career, and was fairly consistent production over his last three years. For his career, averaged 42.7 yards, forced 59 fair catches, and 54 were placed inside the 20. Only had 3 career kickoffs.

NFL FORECAST:

Epperson has the tools, although I'm not sure he's a great bet to stick right away in the league. I think he can handle it, but he's not going to be a guy that probably transitions quickly and easily in the league, so he may need a year or two to work out the kinks in his game. He's got more than enough leg to be a guy that can average 43-45 yards per punt, and shows enough accuracy that he can pin teams and work the short field. He just needs to refine his skills and become more consistent and reliable. If he can do that over the course of his early career, he should have a long NFL career. He may not be a Pro Bowler, but should at worst be an above average punter that can play the better part of a decade or more with a single team because they are comfortable with him.

ATL FORECAST:

Epperson could be a nice replacement for Koenen in terms of his punting potential, if the Falcons opted not to keep Koenen. He's not a candidate to replace him on kickoffs. But he can start off fairly well, kicking in the Georgia Dome, which should help his transition to the league. He definitely won't be as good as Koenen right away, but like his predecessor by his second or third year should have developed enough consistency where he's at least an above average placement punter if not near the top of the heap.

VALUE:

Epperson is good enough to sneak into the seventh round for a punter-needy team but his lack of elite upside probably means he's a better value if you can wait until the undrafted market.

SKILLS
1-poor, 2-weak, 3-above average, 4-very good, 5-elite

Leg Strength: 3.5
Directional Kicking: 3.0
Placement: 3.0
Kick-offs: N/A
Clutch Kicking: 3.0
