In a move that will hurt one Western Conference contender and perhaps create another, the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to terms with former Oklahoma City Thunder shooting guard Kevin Martin on a four-year contract that could be worth as much as $30 million.

"Minny was my first option outside OKC, so I've got to take it," Martin told USA TODAY Sports shortly after giving a verbal agreement on the deal that can't be formalized until the free agency moratorium lifts on July 10. "Especially being (with coach Rick) Adelman, and their starting lineup just needed a two-guard, so I feel like it's a perfect fit. I'm not one to play around. I know where my heart is."

Martin was deliberating other options until the end, as the Memphis Grizzlies were known to be exploring sign-and-trade possibilities to land him and the Milwaukee Bucks also had serious interest.

But while Martin will take a significant pay cut from his previous contract that paid him $11 million annually, it was worth it for the chance to reunite with the coach that he will now have played under three times.

Adelman was coach of the Sacramento Kings when they drafted Martin 26th overall out of Western Carolina in 2004, and he had him again in Houston from 2010 to 2012.

Martin has always been a fan of Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio's game as well, and had hoped the Kings would draft him in 2009 when they opted for Tyreke Evans with the fourth pick instead. Rubio was drafted fifth by Minnesota, but returned to Spain for two more seasons before his NBA career would begin.

The Thunder had shown an interest in bringing Martin back as well, but a return was always unlikely because of their desire to stay out of the league's luxury tax.
