A year ago, Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff shipped a raft of draft picks to the Browns for the right to pick Julio Jones. Though he now has fewer picks this year, Dimitroff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently that he would make such a move again if he had to.

“If you feel that you want to package picks to go up and get the player that you feel can help the team, well, then you use your draft picks as fodder to go after that player,” Dimitroff told the newspaper.

As things stand now, the Falcons, who gave their first- and fourth-round picks to the Browns in that trade, won’t make any picks Thursday until the second round comes along.

I hope he is just blowing smoke. This year def needs to be a"market correction" year. I'm sure he will contact me or Pudge before he does anything rash.

yeah, I get it but at this point, I just wonder what's the use? Does anybody believe TD would follow last years JJ pick by doing something similar this year? That's crazy. At this point, wouldn't it be better to say 'no comment', or deflect, rather then even suggest it's an option that is 'on the table'?

I dont see how being disingenous here works to our advantage, but I haven't read 'War Room', either :P

This is where I get confused. {Insert joke here} The Julio deal is poo-poo'ed by many here, but the same people are bent because we didn't do the same type of deal to get Mario Williams?

4 draft picks or 4 decent players. What is the difference?

your confused because its 'not the same kind of deal'. Mario Williams was not going to cost us ' 4 draft picks or 4 decent players', as we've already discussed ad nauseum.

But what TD is basically trying to say is ' our hands aren't tied. If we see something special, we would burn those picks again!' and if that's truly the way he feels, he is rabbita$$ crazy, or he is just blowing smoke.

TD now has to hit .700 this go around just to maintain this teams momentum. He would be insane to try and trade up this draft. :ninja:

In addition to fun gus's comments, Williams plays a premium position and could have immediately been the best player on our defense and remained so for the next 5-6 years. He's a player you can build around.

Jones is a No. 2 WR, and based off the offense we currently run, won't be more than the 5th or 6th best player on the offense. And thus not really a player you can build around. Now if the Falcons had proceeded to build around him (changing their offense to maximize his skillset), we'd be having a very different conversation. But we're 12 months into the deal, and so far the Falcons haven't budged in that regard, and all the signs indicate that it'll be at least another 12 months before that changes.

Also if you're giving up 4 players to get WIlliams as you like to suggest, all of those players you would be giving up are all players at the end of their careers. Turner, Mughelli, Baker, Robinson, Jerry, etc. Most of those guys will not be Falcons next year, let alone 3-4 years from now. On the other hand, with the Jones trade, you're giving up 4 players that are the beginnings of their careers. All are guaranteed to be Falcons 2-4 years from now? No, but the odds are much higher that they will be than any of the declining veterans we would have had to cut (or more accurately restructure) to get Williams.

They may appear to be similar moves on the surface, but underneath they are completely different.
