THE DEFENSE

• Rank: 23rd in the NFL

• Strength: Sacks (24), takeaways (16)

• Weaknesses: Run (120-yard avg. allowed), deep pass coverage

• Donatell says: "The positive things about this defense; we're second in sacks in the NFL, sixth in [denying] third-down conversion, and this defense is tied for third in takeaways. We've played with a lot of speed and energy and an attacking style that showed up [Oct. 24 in a 27-14 victory over the Jets]. We're looking to sustain that. The biggest areas we want to improve; we've given up some big plays and run yardage. To be where we want to be in the playoffs, that has to be nipped."

Donatell said losing middle linebacker Ed Hartwell to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury was untimely because Hartwell, who had started slowly, had finally begun to emerge. However, having to shift Keith Brooking from weakside linebacker into the middle allowed leading tackler Demorrio Williams to move to his natural position on the weakside and get super-athletic Michael Boley on the field at strongside linebacker. Initially they struggled, as New Orleans ran for 211 yards.

However, in their last game, they held the Jets to 37 rushing yards.

"I felt the swarm," Donatell said. "I felt the speed."

The rapid development of rookie defensive linemen Jonathan Babineaux, Chauncey Davis and Darrell Shropshire and the solid play of Antwan Lake have provided ample depth behind starters Rod Coleman, Chad Lavalais, Brady Smith and Patrick Kerney, which will bode well as the season progresses, Donatell said.

The secondary remains a work in progress.

"What about December and January? We've got to be a lot better to get done what we want to get done," Donatell said. "Playing at this level could possibly not be good enough when we got to that time

Well at least Donatell recognizes there is ample room for improvement, and doesn't seem to belief that after a good overall game vs. the Jets, that those problems are solved.

good stuff....we all know this level of play on D isn't good enough to go very far in post season....and the passing game, just like last year, is killing us.....it has GOT to get better, or we're looking at Mediocrity!

When Donatell was in Green Bay he played a softer defense. He does emphasize turnovers and third down defense. A team can give up a lot of yards if you stop the other team or get a turnover.

His style can irritate but is effective. A real gamble is his double corner blitz. When it works it is great.

His firing in Green Bay was not entirely on the 4th and 26 play given up to the Eagles that stopped the Packers Super Bowl run in 2003.

The problem in Atlanta is that we are not an interception machine right now.

Favre is due for a big game but the Packers have had to simplify their offense due to so many injured players at WR and RB. They are playing a preseason type offense.

If Donatell looks bad against the Packers he is not as good as advertized.
