Julio Jones Contract Breakdown

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY SportsJulio Jones

Thanks to the information released by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure, we have a complete picture of the new five-year extension that Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones signed.

Jones reportedly signed a five-year extension worth $71.25 million with $47 million guaranteed. In total, his deal is really a six-year deal worth $81.426 million, given that the extension was on top of the $10.176 million he was already set to make in 2015.

The guaranteed portion of Jones’ contract is made up of the first three years of base salaries totaling $23.5 million, his signing bonus of $12 million and a pair of roster bonuses that total $11.5 million. Of that $47 million combined, $35.5 million is fully guaranteed at signing, with the remaining portion only guaranteed for injury. That injury guarantee will turn into a full guarantee if Jones is on the roster on the third day of the 2016 league year (which is 99.9999 percent likely).

Jones will receive a roster bonus of $7.5 million in 2015 and $4 million in 2016. He also received a workout bonus of $6,045 this season. His base salaries are as follows:

2015 – $2,500,000
2016 – $9,500,000
2017 – $11,500,000
2018 – $10,500,000
2019 – $12,500,000
2020 – $11,426,000

Jones’ cap hits are:

2015 – $12,406,045
2016 – $15,900,000
2017 – $13,900,000
2018 – $12,900,000
2019 – $14,900,000
2020 – $11,426,000

The guaranteed base salaries¬†over the first three years likely¬†indicates that Jones will be a Falcon at least through 2017. Once those guarantees run out in 2018, then it becomes more realistic that Jones could be cut or traded with minimal impact to the Falcons’ salary cap. In 2018 alone, cutting Jones would save $8.1 million on the Falcons’ salary cap.

Overall, Jones’ contract is the second-largest ever given to a wide receiver in almost every way:
