Moneyball 2011 – Week 11 Review

A solid performance for the offense, although there wasn’t anything great about. Matt Ryan had a solid game managing the offense, with only 1 poor throw on the day. Michael Turner had several nice runs and was his old powerful self, breaking tackles on some of them.

The Falcons were able to spread the ball around to different receivers with Julio Jones out of the lineup, with Michael Palmer and Eric Weems getting some action in the passing game. Roddy White had a nice bounce-back game from last week, although he still wasn’t perfect. But he made some nice grabs on the day. Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas also were solid.

The blocking was solid, with Ryan having good protection. Justin Blalock didn’t have a great day, missing 3 blocks, although it is worth noting most of them came when he was pulling or supposed to hit an assignment on the second level. Neither of those two things have ever really been his strength.

Overall, it was a solid performance for the offense. But nothing special. This is the type of game that is giong to be quickly forgotten because there really wasn’t anything notable to happen in it. The struggles the team had converting in the redzone are a chief concern, and it’s hopefully something that can be nipped in the bud.

When I was watching the game, I was aware that Jonathan Babineaux was having a good game, but then looking at the final tally, I was pretty astounded. He was batting balls and making stops behind the line, but he really padded his total with his pressures, many of which came on stunts. His total in this game matched the total of John Abraham in his monster performance against the Browns last year. The front did their job of containing Johnson, and pressuring their QBs. I’m betting it’s one of the reasons why Sean Weatherspoon might have the worst game of his 2011 season. He didn’t play poorly, but he just didn’t really stand out. Curtis Lofton had a solid day, one of his best games. Brent Grimes had a very good game, and Dunta Robinson relative to his normal game was excellent. But he got away with a pass interference in the endzone late in the first half, and had he given up that play, it probably changes perceptions because the Titans get a touchdown instead of 3 points by halftime, and this game is much closer. So thank you to the refs for missing that call! Chris Owens struggled replacing Kelvin Hayden. The difference between the two is alarming, especially once you consider that Hayden is nothing special in coverage. But the Titans had little problem locating Nate Washington and Jared Cook in the middle of the defense mainly because of Owens struggles, and that of the safeties to cover those two. DeCoud had another subpar performance, and once William Moore is healthy, he’s probably going to have to worry about his starting position again.

On special teams, Bosher extends his streak of looking competent to 3 games.
