Moneyball – Week 12 Review

Another solid performance for Ryan. He was asked to manage the game and he did exactly that to a very high degree. Michael Turner had a solid game, and a big reason for that was the blocking of Ovie Mughelli up front.  I’m sure a few of the Packers linebackers didn’t sleep too well Sunday night because of dreams of a bright red #34 charging at them. Although it wasn’t reflected in the stat sheets, Sam Baker probably had one of his best games run blocking. Not a great day for him, but relative to many of his performances over the past two years, it was strong. Although he did have more trouble blocking Frank Zombo than I would expect. Tyson Clabo did an excellent job on Clay Matthews and he was not a factor in the passing game at all (although he did flex his muscles at times vs. the run). Justin Blalock looked lost out there for the most part.

Roddy was contained for the most part, but that did free up some opportunities for Gonzo and Jenkins, and the backs also made their presence felt on check downs with guys like Snelling and Ovie making some nice runs after the catch.

The penalties were not a huge problem, but a cause for concern as the Falcons were flagged with three personal fouls in this game. The one by Dahl on the initial drive killed that momentum and the Falcons had to settle for 3 instead of potentially converting and going on for 7.

Defensively, the Falcons weren’t great, but they decided to play bend but don’t break style. They rushed only 3 passers for a big chunk of the game. And even when they rushed 4, didn’t get much pressure on Rodgers. He had all day to throw many times, and when he didn’t, he simply tucked and ran. The only real times the Falcons were able to put pressure on him is when they blitzed. Brian Williams did an excellent job there. I did not credit Abraham with a sack, he was instead credited with a QB hit and forced fumble. The linebackers played well given they were asked to drop in coverage a ton. DeCoud kind of got gipped on the two blown coverages, both coming on the game-tying drive for the Packers. The first came on the 4th & 1 conversion where he was initially covering James Jones, but because Jordy Nelson was streaking wide open down the sideline (thanks Dunta), he ran after Nelson to prevent the touchdown, leaving Jones wide open in the middle of the field. The second was for the touchdown throw to Nelson, who was initially covered by Nicholas, but released when Nelson crossed with Jones in the back of the endzone. So he basically got dinged points because he failed to cover up for other’s mistakes.

Lofton’s forced fumble was probably the play of the game because it basically resulted in a 14-point swing that without it the Falcons probably don’t win. If another player could be critical to the W, it was Eric Weems big return at the end that basically guaranteed the Falcons would be in field goal range when the time came. Matt Bryant continues to be outstanding, as he’s perfect so far this year in the Dome.
