Ahtyba Roy Rubin was born on July 25, 1986 in Fort Belvoir, VA. His first name is pronounced ah-TAH-bah. He attended Escambia High in Pensacola, FL before enrolling at Trinity Valley (TX) Community College. He played defensive line as a freshman before making the switch to the offensive line as a sophomore, where he started in 12 games. He earned first team All-Southwest Football Junior College Conference honors and NJCAA All-American honorable mention during his one year on the offensive line playing guard. He transferred to Iowa State the following year and was moved back to the defensive line. He started the final nine of 12 games at nose guard, recording 34 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack. As a senior he started all 12 games at nose guard, earning honorable mention Big 12 honors. He recorded 42 tackles, four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round (190th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft.
