He was born on August 29, 1992 in Visalia, CA. He graduated from Nipomo (CA) High. He was recruited to San Jose State as a wide receiver but moved to defense during his initial redshirt season. He played exclusively on special teams during his first two years at SJSU, playing in 10 combined games. He saw his first action on defense as a junior, playing in 11 games. He played both cornerback and safety, earning 15 tackles and two pass breakups. He started 12 games at strong safety as a senior, finishing the year with 71 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups. He was also a three-time honoree of the academic all-conference teams, earning those honors in the WAC as a sophomore and twice in the Mountain West as a junior and senior. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round (249th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
