Benjamin N. Garland was born on April 6, 1988 in Grand Junction, CO where he attended Central High School. He enrolled at the Air Force Academy, where he played in four games as a reserve during his freshman season. He finished the year with two tackles and one tackle for loss. He played in every game as a sophomore, starting the last eight at nose guard. He finished the year with 31 tackles, three tackles for loss and three sacks. He started every game at nose guard during his junior season and recorded 39 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, two pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles. As a senior he once again started every game at nose guard and had 45 tackles, 10.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. He earned second-team All-Mountain West honors as a senior. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Denver Broncos in 2010 but spent the next two years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force.
