He was born on December 13, 1989 in Eufala, AL, where he graduated from Eufala High. As a true freshman at Alabama, he appeared in 13 games as a reserve at "JACK" outside linebacker. He finished the year with 22 tackles, including a team-high 18 on special teams, three tackles for loss and two passes defended. As a sophomore he started one game at JACK in 14 appearances. He finished the year with 15 tackles, one for loss, one sack and recovered one fumble, which he returned 45 yards for a touchdown. Prior to his sophomore year, he was arrested for domestic assault against his girlfriend, but the charges were later dropped. As a junior he started 11 of 13 games at JACK, recording 52 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two passes defended, four forced fumbles and one recovery. He started all 13 games at JACK as a senior, earning first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American honors. He was also named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award (top defender) as he finished the year with 52 tackles, 18 for loss, 9.5 sacks, one interception returned 45 yards for a touchdown and two forced fumbles. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round (35th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.
