Dontari Poe was born on August 18, 1990 in Memphis, TN, graduating from Wooddale High. As a redshirt freshman at Memphis, he started six of 11 games at nose tackle. He finished the season with 27 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks and three forced fumbles. He was named to the Conference-USA All-Freshman team. He assumed full-time starting duties as a sophomore, logging starts in all 12 games. He recorded 41 tackles, 6.5 for loss, two sacks and a single pass deflection on his way to the honorable mention All-Conference USA team. His junior season he started all 12 games, recording 33 tackles, eight for loss, one sack, three pass deflections and one forced fumble on his way to second-team All-Conference USA honors. He declared for the 2012 NFL Draft as a junior, where he was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round (11th overall). He was named to the 2013 and 2014 Pro Bowl teams.

2017: Signed a one-year contract with the Falcons worth $8 million. It could be worth up to $10 million if he hits incentives. His deal includes a base of $7.5 million in 2017 and $500,000 workout bonus that is due in four $125,000 weigh-in bonuses. The first weigh-in on June 13, 2017 (team's first day of mandatory minicamp) requires Poe weigh at 340 pounds or less. The second on July 27 (first day of training camp), requires him to hit 330 pounds or less. The subsequent two on September 4 and November 6, also require him to maintain his 330 pound weight or less.
