He was born on August 9, 1994 and attended John Curtis High in River Ridge, LA. As a freshman at LSU, he appeared in 13 games as a reserve outside linebacker and played on special teams. He finished the year with seven tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. As a sophomore he played in 13 games, making a single start at strongside linebacker. He finished the year with 20 tackles, one fumble recovery and nine stops on special teams. His junior season saw him play in 12 games as a reserve weakside linebacker, recording 24 tackles (including seven on special teams) and 0.5 tackles for loss. He assumed the starting role at weakside linebacker as a senior, starting all 12 games and finishing with 93 tackles, nine for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round (75th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.
