Dwight Jason Freeney was born on February 19, 1980 in Hartford, CT. He attended Bloomfield (CT) High School. As a true freshman at Syracuse, Freeney appeared in 10 games as a reserve defensive end and finished the year with four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup and two forced fumbles. During his sophomore year he started two of 11 games, missing one game due to an injured tendon in his right hand. He finished the year with 19 tackles, five tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. As a junior he broke out despite missing the last four games due to an illness. He managed to start seven games that year and recorded 32 tackles, 18 for loss and 13 sacks, including 4.5 in one game that set a Big East and school record. He also added one pass breakup and three forced fumbles that year on his way to first-team All-Big East honors. He truly shined as a senior as he started all 12 games, finishing the year with 49 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks. His sack total set a new NCAA, Big East and Syracuse single-season record. He also set an NCAA record with 11 combined forced fumbles (eight) and fumble recoveries (three), with the forced fumbles also being a conference single-season record. He was a first-team All-American and All-Big East honoree, as well as being named a finalist for he Lombardi Award (best lineman/linebacker), Bednarik Award (best defender) and Nagurski Trophy (best defender) that year. He was originally selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round (11th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He earned trips to the Pro Bowl in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
