He was born on January 23, 1986 in Santa Cruz, CA. He attended Soquel (CA) High before enrolling at Cabrillo College, a local junior college. As a freshman free safety at Cabrillo, he led the state with 8 interceptions, returned for 237 yards and 2 scores. He also had 69 tackles, 6 pass breakups, and 2 fumble recoveries in 10 games. He also earned 1st team All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League honors that year. As a sophomore, he appeared in 5 games before a hand injury sidelined him. He still finished with 26 tackles, 5 interceptions for 202 yards, and earned All-Conference honors again despite a limited season. He finished his career at Cabrillo with 10 kickoff returns for 300 yards (30.0 avg) and a touchdown, and also scored twice on a blocked punt and blocked field goal. He also rushed the ball once for 18 yards and forced a fumble. He transferred to San Jose State as a junior, earning the starting cornerback spot. He started 13 games as a junior, recording 48 tackles, 9 interceptions for 111 yards, 7 pass breakups, 3 fumble recoveries on his way to earn 1st team All-WAC honors and 3rd team All-American honors. His 9 picks led the nation that year. He also returned 5 punts for 42 yards (8.4 avg). As a senior, he would once again earn 1st team All-WAC honors, starting 12 games, and recording 44 tackles, 4 interceptions for 36 yards and a touchdown, 7 pass breakups, with 19 punt returns for 273 yards (14.4 avg) and a touchdown. He was originally selected by the New York Jets in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft.
