He was born on September 30, 1996 in Phoenix, AZ where he graduated from Brophy Preparatory. His father, Muhammad, played cornerback in the NFL for five different teams from 1992 to 1995. His uncle, Damon Mays, played wide receiver in the NFL with the Houston Oilers from 1992-93. As a true freshman at Colorado he started three of 13 games at cornerback. He finished the year with 19 tackles and six pass breakups. He started three of 13 games as a sophomore as well, recording 31 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, 14 pass breakups and one forced fumble. He also returned 15 punts for 158 yards (10.5 avg) and a touchdown. As a junior he started all 10 games, missing two games due to a leg injury. He finished the season with 27 tackles, two interceptions return for 41 yards and 13 pass breakups on his way to earn first-team All-Pac 12 honors. He also returned five punts for 16 yards (3.2 avg). He also participated in the decathlon for Colorado's outdoor track team his final two years, earning All-Pac 12 honors both years. He declared early for the 2018 NFL Draft and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round (58th overall).
