Jacques Devon Smith was born on December 31, 1991 in Chattanooga, TN and attended Ooltewah (TN) High. As a true freshman at Tennessee, he appeared in 13 games as a reserve. He finished the season with 24 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. As a sophomore, he earned 8 starts at left defensive end while appearing in 12 total games. He finished the year with 35 tackles, 7.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks, 1 pass breakup and 1 forced fumble. As a junior, he started 6 of 12 games at JACK outside linebacker in Tennessee's 3-4 scheme. He finished the year with 33 tackles, 7 for loss, and 2 sacks. As a senior, he missed the first month of the season with a broken thumb, but managed to still start 9 of 10 games at right defensive end. He finished the year with 28 tackles, 2 for loss, 0.5 sacks, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery. His lone interception was returned 18 yards for a touchdown. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft.
