Jeffrey Kyle Mathews was born on May 5, 1992 and attended Camarillo (CA) High. As a true freshman at Cornell, he took over the starting spot at quarterback in the second half of his first game. He would lead the Big Red to a 2-7 record that year in 9 total starts, passing for 1,723 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while completing 172 of 314 passes (54.8%). As a sophomore, he started all 10 games, leading the team to a 5-5 record. He completed 250 of 368 passes (67.9%) for a conference-record 3,412 yards while also throwing for 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He earned the Bushnell Cup, honoring the Ivy League's top offensive player as well as 1st team All-conference honors. As a junior, he started 9 games, earning a 3-6 record as a starter. He completed 251 of 405 passes (62%) for 3,196 yards, 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He would earn 2nd team All-Ivy League honors that season as well. As a senior, he started 9 games and posted a 2-7 record as a starter. He completed 228 of 360 passes (63.3%) for 2,953 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while once again earning 2nd team All-Ivy League honors. He finished his career as the school and conference's all-time leader in completions (901), attempts (1,447) and yards (11,284). He was also Cornell's all-time leader in touchdowns (72). He was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft.
