He was born on October 30, 1988 in Clifton Park, NY and attended Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, NY. As a redshirt freshman he missed the first six games of the season with a broken foot injury. He wound up appearing in five games as a reserve, recording one tackle. As a sophomore he started 13 games at defensive tackle on his way to record 63 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. As a junior he started all 12 games at defensive tackle, finishing the season with 94 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two recoveries. He also earned second-team All-American and first-team All-ACC honors that year. As a senior he started all 12 games at defensive end with Maryland's move to a 3-4 defense. He recorded 61 tackles, 14 for loss, six sacks and one interception on his way to earn first-team All-ACC honors. Originally signed by the New England Patriots as an undrafted rookie following the 2013 NFL Draft.
