He was born on May 11, 1988 in Monrovia, Liberia. He graduated from Central Gwinnett High in Lawrenceville, GA. He is cousins with Visanthe Shiancoe (New York Giants, 2003-06; Minnesota Vikings, 2007-11) and Mohamed Massaquoi (Cleveland Browns 2009-present). After high school he enrolled at Butler County Community College in Kansas, where he grayshirted as a freshman. The following year, he recorded 96 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks. He earned JC All-American honors that year as well as 1st team All-Jayhawk Conference honors. He transferred to Troy the following year and redshirted. As a sophomore in 2010, he started 13 games and recorded 76 tackles, 20.5 for loss, 13.5 sacks, 1 pass defended, 1 forced fumble, and 3 fumble recoveries. He started 12 games as a junior with 52 tackles, 10.5 for loss, 6 sacks, 2 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 blocked kick. He earned 1st team All-Sun Belt honors both years at Troy. He declared as a junior for the 2012 NFL Draft and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round (164th overall).
