Jordan Lee Tripp was born on April 3, 1991 in Missoula, MT where he attended Big Sky High School. As a true freshman at the University of Montana he appeared in 15 games as a reserve linebacker on special teams. He finished the year with 23 tackles, one pass breakup and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. He was promoted to starting strong-side linebacker as a sophomore, starting all 11 games there. He finished the year with 99 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception returned 22 yards for a touchdown, three pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. He earned his second consecutive stint on the Academic All-Big Sky team as a sophomore and was named to the All-Big Sky honorable mention team for his on-field work. He started the first three games on the strong side as a junior, but suffered a shoulder injury that cost him the rest of the season. He was awarded a medical redshirt. He finished the year with 18 tackles, 1.5 for loss and one fumble recovery. As a redshirt junior he moved to weak-side linebacker, where he started all 11 games. He recorded 95 tackles, 13.5 for loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception returned 58 yards, two pass breakups, four forced fumbles and one recovery for an 80-yard touchdown. He earned first team All-Big Sky and third-team FCS All-American honors, and was named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defender in FCS football. As a redshirt senior he started all 13 games at weak-side linebacker, recording a career-high 100 tackles. He also finished 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, including one for a touchown and a blocked kick. He was once again a Buck Buchanan finalist and earned first team All-American and All-Big Sky recognition. He was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round (171st overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.
