He was born on April 27, 1989 and graduated from Carrollton (GA) High School. He walked onto Auburn's football team, and first earned playing time as a sophomore appearing in 13 games as the team's long snapper on field goals, PATs, and punts. He also had 4 tackles on special teams. As a junior, he received a scholarship and appeared in 14 games as the team's full-time long snapper. His senior season, he played in 13 games as the full-time snapper and had 3 tackles on special teams. He earned Academic All-SEC honors three times throughout his career at Auburn. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2012.
