Justin Andrew Bethel was born on June 17, 1990 in Sumter, SC. He graduated from Blythewood (SC) High School before enrolling at Presbyterian College. As a true freshman, he started 10 of 12 games at cornerback. He recorded 54 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. He started the first five games of his sophomore season at cornerback before injuries forced him to finish the season with six starts at free safety. He recorded 79 tackles, 4.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. He added three blocked kicks and a single rushing attempt for 26 yards on a fake punt. He also earned second-team All-Big South Conference honors. His junior season saw him earn 10 starts at both cornerback and free safety, finishing the season with 59 tackles, two for loss, one interception, three pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also added a blocked kick on his way to second-team All-Big South honors once more. His senior season saw him start all 11 games at free safety, recording a career-high 87 tackles, along with 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, four interceptions, six pass breakups and one forced fumble. He scored three touchdowns, one on an interception and two on blocked punts. He had a total of three blocked kicks that year. He earned Big South Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Big South and second-team FCS All-American honors to go along with being a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in FCS. He finished his career as the school record holder in tackles (279), interceptions (seven) and blocked kicks (nine). He was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2013, 2014 and 2015 as a special teams player.
