He was born in Pittsburg, KS where he attended Pittsburg High. His older brother Shad was a backup tight end with the Tennessee Titans (2001-04) and New Orleans Saints (2005). He began his career as quarterback, starting 8 games as a freshman. He completed 104 of 184 passes (56.5%) for 1193 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Also in his career, he punted 4 times for an average of 32.3 yards as a junior. He also completed 5 of 6 passes for 144 yards and a score combined during his final two seasons. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round (165th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.
